2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumAnother problem for Hillary in a potential Hillary vs. Donald election
Thom Hartmann has been talking about this for a few days now. These trade deals have decimated the manufacturing and the middle class. When the "free trade" first came out about 20% of the people voted for Ross Perot who popularized his phrase of a "vast sucking sound" of jobs leaving the country. . . He called it and people voted for him.
Today it is 80+% of the public who knows they have been bad for the US. Donald is AGAINST them. If he makes his campaign on that, he will be to the LEFT of Clinton and on the side of the public sentiment.
That could be a big problem.

(10,175 posts)But at a congressional hearing in 2011, Clinton told lawmakers that "with respect to the TPP, although the State Department does not have the lead on this -- it is the United States Trade Representative -- we work closely with the USTR." Additionally, State Department cables reviewed by International Business Times show that her agency -- including her top aides -- were deeply involved in the diplomatic deliberations over the trade deal. The cables from 2009 and 2010, which were among a trove of documents disclosed by the website WikiLeaks, also show that the Clinton-run State Department advised the U.S. Trade Representatives office on how to negotiate the deal with foreign government officials.
In recent months, labor, environmental, public health and consumer advocacy groups have campaigned against the TPP, saying the pact is a stealth attempt by corporations to tilt the rules of international commerce in their favor. They have specifically criticized provisions in the deal -- which are secret but have periodically leaked -- that they say would empower corporations to use international tribunals to attempt to overturn public interest laws. The groups represent many core Democratic Party constituencies that Clinton has been courting in her White House bid, which explains why in the lead-up to the party's primary she has suddenly depicted herself as a critic of the deal. But the cables show that the Clinton-run State Department was indeed a major player in pushing the initiative.

(47,143 posts)All it says is the State Department advised USTR on matters of diplomacy. Calling her an architect suggests that she was responsible for designing it and that is nonsense.

SHe has triangulated to basically say that it needs to be tweaked (after she helped write it)
Only 5 chapters are about trade, the other 20+ are about installing corporate sovereignty over ELECTED Government sovereignty
It's an abortion of Democracy. It needs to die.

(23,730 posts)and then they saw Democrats laughing and laughing at those straight white male losers who worked all their lives and then lost it all
now the Angry White Male lives and breathes on ungrounded rage, and the more He earns the more He fears he'll lose it--Trump's followers are mostly the gentry benefiting from the fire-sale of America and are driven by not wanting "those people" to get any money, sure
but his message wouldn't go beyond these people, wouldn't set up this dangerous contrast with Clinton that could sink her: Trump's a bigmouth and is basically America's Palpatine, but he's pure right-populist instinct and that means pointing out the distractions that the "globalists" have used to snooker voters of both parties while they pop the champagne once the doors are shut
