2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumTrump promises to obliterate Clinton’s record
Donald Trump turned his attention to the next phase of his run for the White House and his next opponent, Hillary Clinton.
The general election, he suggested in an interview, will not find him dialing back his scorched-earth approach to winning.
Her past is really the thing, rather than what she plans to do in the future, Trump said. Her past has a lot of problems, to put it bluntly.
Through this wild GOP presidential primary race, Trump has dispatched his opponents with insults, slurs and scornful nicknames.
I havent devoted any time, effort, energy to Hillary yet. I havent started on that process because Ive been focused on the nomination, which is probably wise, he said. With Hillary, I will be starting the process as soon as this is over.

(1,748 posts)Bernie couldn't go after her too hard because he has to appeal to people who mostly don't care about her awful record and her immense load of baggage. She's got a D by her name and that's all that matters.
Who out of those who don't already support her will respond negatively when he starts attacking her?

(18,837 posts)His baggage...or anyone else's...doesn't negate hers.
It would be really, really easy to underestimate how much the GOP loathes Clinton, how they have hammered home a repeated meme of her as the "bogeywoman" or whatever you want to call it, the guaranteed end of civilization as we know it.
And whether they like it or not, Clinton carries no small amount of baggage, and it's all going to come out, in magnified and exaggerated and documented-with-YouTube-clips form.
Look at what they did to Kerry...the Swift Boating, people like Michelle Malkin saying he shot himself to get the Purple Heart...
IF Clinton gets the nomination...IF the #CallItSkinner crowd takes their victory lap...people like the Kochs and Sheldon Adelson are going to throw OBSCENE amounts of money into the Trump machine, and there will be an army working 24/7 to fan the flames of what's already out there.
And the worst part of this is that Clinton knows it.
So yeah, by all means, copy and paste as much anti-Bernie content as you'd like. It's not going to move Clinton forward by a single inch.

(99,710 posts)Koch and Adelson won't give Trump a red cent. The former won't give him a red cent because his protectionist inclinations will kill his business and the latter won't give him a red cent because he isn't going to put the fate of his beloved Israel in the hands of someone as mercurial as Trump.
The Goldwater-Johnson race is the analog for this one and all the big money went to the latter.

or
2). They'll go for the throat
I don't think there's an analog for this one...we haven't seen this before.
If you're right, you're right, and there's no way the Republicans will rebound...not in the 2020 election cycle, maybe longer after that.
I just don't think we can can compare this to anything that's happened in the past.

(114,904 posts)She'll decimate him. He is completely undisciplined and incapable of switching gears. And she'll slaughter him in the debates.

(18,837 posts)The other thing to consider here is that the more rabid Trump supporters just...don't...listen.
They listen to what they're fed by Trump, and that's about it.
"He is completely undisciplined and incapable of switching gears."
100% true. But if stumbles across a gear that works and Clinton blinks, he's going to hammer that gear all the way to the Oval Office.
The challenge I'm facing is that I simply don't like her or trust her. It makes it hard for me to have confidence in her.
That, and the fact that there is no shortage of people who want to see her fail.
I'd like to see her change, to become more aware of the world outside of her own personal ambition. I don't expect to see that any time soon.

(10,476 posts)Can you imagine the first time there's a head-to-head debate? Or even worse for Trump, one of those town hall style ones? That bluster works great when you have a red meat audience and Neal Cavuto moderating your debate. On neutral ground against a single opponent, there will be no place to hide, no time for snide facial expressions while 8 other candidates rip each other apart.
Al Gore got some guff just for sighing once during a debate; Trump's antics will get him crucified by the media.
