Courier-Journal: Takeaways from Bernie Sanders in Louisville

Phillip M. Bailey, @phillipmbailey 11:43 p.m. EDT May 3, 2016

Democratic presidential contender Bernie Sanders dropped by Louisville's Waterfront Park on Tuesday to campaign. Here's what to know about his visit.

1. "Yuge" crowd

Sanders supporters were able to fill out the area under the Big Four Bridge on a chilly evening.

The crowd of about 7,000 people that turned out to see the senator from Vermont was diverse and energetic, cheering his positions on income inequality, criminal justice reform and the environment.
2. Diversity and inequality

Sanders gave his usual speech that touched on cracking down on Wall Street, a $15 minimum wage, healthcare for all, and free tuition. The senator also appealed to his racially diverse crowd by saying that there is a need for criminal justice, immigration reform and police accountability. During the speech, two Hispanic men approached the stage to hug the senator, with one saying “Viva Bernie!” Sanders said police officers have a hard and difficult job but that deadly force should be the last resort, not the first.

3. Hillary slammed

Sanders went on the offensive against frontrunner Hillary Clinton, reminding his base that she voted for the war in Iraq and gave $250,000 speeches at Goldman Sachs.

Clinton's remarks to Wall Street firms must've been "Shakespearean prose" but that she has yet to release them.

One of these days, those of you not familiar with politics will understand the size of the crowd while it is wonderful and exciting to have a huge crowd, doesn't matter. What matters is how people vote and so far, Bernie's on the short end of that stick.

Sanders is attracting the young, well - because they are young and idealistic. That's a good thing. I was there once, young and fighting against the Viet Nam war, I get it. He's playing to the emotions of young people ready for the fight against injustice.

Would I love a knight in shining armor to come and deliver us from the mess our country is in? Who wouldn't? But Sanders is not that man or woman for me. I don't think he's strong enough.

Do I think Clinton is perfect? No. I do think she is eminently more qualified to be president than Sanders because she understands the intricacies of the world stage.

We disagree - nothing wrong with that. What is wrong with this campaign season is the vitriol which is spewing forth from all sides, Democrat and Republican. We need to grow up, all of us.

and you see vitriol? By the way, I'm not young. I'm 59. I'm truly sorry that you lost your idealism somewhere along the path of life but please don't take it out on people who still have it and see that it's still worth fighting for.

Geez.. don't take things so personally. I was talking about vitriol in general within this election and the same thing occurs right here on DU considering some of the personal comments uttered when people get defensive. You stated the numbers from the Journal, no one argued with you that they were incorrect.

My point is Sanders is taking advantage of the idealism of young people, but not offering them or the rest of us any solutions.

BTW, I have never lost my idealism, nor will I, but I am also practical. So don't worry your little head about me...

Not sure if realize it but you did respond to him as stated in your post "Response to pmorlan1 (Reply #1)" and then in your post you said, "

No if you did not mean to direct that at the OP the why you said it was totally off and does in fact seem you are saying it to him.
If had left out those of you he might not of taken it to mean him. But using word "you" in the way I learned English refers to person you are talking to. So really do say "I wasn't talking about you..." when you used word you directed in reply to him to outside 3rd party might see like you are just not paying attention to your posts.

now why doesn't he discuss his 'positions' on the campaign trail.... wouldn't be prudent... needs to stir the blood of his supporters, not offer how he would govern the country.

I do wish that Sanders supporters would stop assuming anyone who doesn't support the great Bern is not progressive. It's getting annoying.

I simply don't like him and don't feel he's qualifed to be president. My opinion...

Where did you deduce I was against anyone getting to see the candidate they support?

I only commented that Sander's never changes his speech... rambles about all the emotional points we would all like to see changed but never offers solutions. I'd like to know how he's going to accomplish these lofty goals.

The same question I would ask of Clinton or any candidate. Clinton has given us specifics. Still waiting for those from Sanders.

I agree it's probably a tough situation for Bernie, but we've seen in cases like Oklahoma where similar states to Kentucky demographically have been good for him. He's certainly making a strong run at it though, he's visited Louisville, Lexington, and Bowling Green so far. I'd love to see him go stump down in the hollers too!

"Sanders went on the offensive against frontrunner Hillary Clinton, reminding his base that she voted for the war in Iraq and gave $250,000 speeches at Goldman Sachs. "

From what I know she did vote for the Iraq war,but her speech I saw on TV back then might of been some evil double from Mirror Universe. It is no big secret that she did. Do you not think Trump does not know this? I know many here think Trump is stupid but a couple weeks ago he got a new campaign manger and that guy is not some women assaulting thug last one was. I hope Clinton is not thinking this as we are not going to see same Trump as we did before. and no one should underestimate the stupidity of Americans in voting for a popular TV figure like Trump. Hell America lives off lives of Kim Kardashian and her family.
Because Kim made a video of herself doing the nasty on camera ie a unpaid porn star.

And in saying that this helps Trump means you think her voting for Iraq war was wrong? Because if it is not wrong then how can Trump use it to sway other people? If it was not wrong then Trump talking about it means nothing.
