Clinton: 'I have a lot of empathy' for Sanders
By Ben Kamisar
Hillary Clinton says she understands Bernie Sanderss decision not to drop out of the Democratic race for the presidency despite his long odds of winning the party's nomination.
"I have a lot of empathy about this. I ran to the very end in 2008, and I won nine of the last 12 contests, people forget that," Clinton said during a Wednesday interview on CNN.
"But I couldn't close the gap in pledged delegates. And the gap between me and Sen. Sanders is far wider than it was between me and Sen. Obama."
She added that she would not refer to herself as the presumptive nominee and that she respects Sanders's choice to stay in the race.

OP
I think that's very gracious of her, and besides that, very smart. Good on you Hillary.

I see this as more manipulation. She had her surrogates demand he drop out.

That's how Democrats do it.

He didn't.
The Clinton campaign hoped that Sanders supporters would be too demoralized to show to vote for him.
They showed up in enough numbers to defeat her in Indiana.
Now that Clinton realizes that people really support Sanders in a way that can't be easily crushed, she has to try to rebuild the bridges she gleefully burned during the campaign.
"But I couldn't close the gap in pledged delegates. And the gap between me and Sen. Sanders is far wider than it was between me and Sen. Obama."
Even when she is allegedly expressing empathy, she can't resist attacking. Well attacking Democrats and liberals, the Clintons generally don't attack republicans.
She added that she would not refer to herself as the presumptive nominee and that she respects Sanders's choice to stay in the race.
I'm still of the opinion that if she had acted like that from the beginning, along with being genuine, Clinton probably would have won.
