2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumWould it be better for the Party if the Bernie and Hillary factions were to unite?
If you look at the total votes cast in Indiana, you will notice that Trump alone had almost as many votes as Hillary and Bernie combined. Granted, Indiana is a red state, but should Democrats be out-numbered, to such an extent, in Indiana?
Bernie supporters are not hard-core Democrats. Many are very young and have not had any political affiliation until Bernie came along. Is it safe to piss off these folks? Are we confident Hillary can win without Bernie supporters?
Bernie supporters cannot pretend that they have no responsibility beyond the primary between Hillary and Bernie. Yes, they can sit it out. But should they?
Where can the Hillary campaign meet these folks halfway?
I think I know one thing that will unite the Democratic Party with the Progressives.
President Donald Trump.

(496 posts)No one will care or pay any mind to either wing. There's a new coalition aborning, it may be of convenience but it may have legs. The pitch will be to defeat Trump and form a new coalition in Washington that can get things done besides shutting down the government every once in a while.

(2,125 posts)Hill's disapproval ratings render your prediction a delusional pipe dream. She''s
going to go down in flames just like '08. All Republicans hate her like poison and
Independents will vote for Jill Stein.

(12,471 posts)After all, she is one of the third way Democrats, isn't she?
The Dems have been a Progressive Liberal party until the last Clinton became president. He drove it right into the laps of the neo-liberal capitalists, and we have what we do now. He kowtowed to the opposition, and took the part on a hard right turn.
If ANYONE has to come around, it's Clinton.

(5,240 posts)That is the problem.
Many Bernie supporters don't really agree with the Party.
It doesn't help that many of them are independent and don't feel that they are welcomed in it.
And why worry about what is better for the party and not better for the people.
We aint a freaking sports team.
Many Bernie Supporters feel as if Hillary is deeply a part of the same problems she is campaigning against.
They don't trust that what she says now is what she will do later, because she has a past record of doing that very thing.
I don't see a mass uniting.
She may still win without it.
I wouldn't bet money on it, but who knows?

(47,803 posts)I know it often feels that way here....But there are millions of supporters and each has their own views of the otehr candidate and how that fits into the larger scheme of things.
kentuck
(111,094 posts)but I think there is a substantial number that will not. They have little or no attraction to the present Democratic Party, in my opinion.
