How soon before Republicans...

... pick the one they are going to run against Trump and Clinton as an Independent?

Of course, their hope would not be to win, but rather, to deny Clinton a majority of the electors, and thereby send it to the House.

If no candidate receives a majority of Electoral votes, the House of Representatives elects the President from the 3 Presidential candidates who received the most Electoral votes. Each state delegation has one vote.

Note: It says "majority" not "plurality."

It may be a slim hope on their part, but it's their only shot at stopping both Hillary and Trump.

They may be happy simple continuing the exodus to the New Democratic Party and will support Clinton in completing that center right switch.

If he ran, and it were just the 3 of them, it would likely result in a Trump win, or it would end up in the House. If it went to the House the only thing that is just about certain is that they wouldn't pick Sanders.

With a Republican "independent," it would likely result in a Hillary win, or it would be sent to the House, where they would install the "independent."
