2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumI don't care what you say about Hillary Clinton or Bernie Sanders
There is absolutely NOTHING that you can post here that could make be believe that I should NOT vote Democratic in the General Election.
I am EXTREMELY comfortable with a President Clinton or a President Sanders. In fact I look forward to getting involved in helping out with the General Elections up in Pennsylvania to ensure that we keep the White House Democratic come 2017. (And maybe pick up a Senate seat to boot!)
I'm sure some of you have your tales of 'Doom and Gloom' to share with me as to why one of these candidates really isn't qualified to be president. And you know what - BULLSHIT.
Because on Bernie Sanders OR Hillary Clinton's absolutely WORST DAY EVER - I'd still rather have one of them in the White House than that scam artist Donald Trump.
Any argument otherwise is bullshit. This isn't just about our economy - this is about the civil rights of millions of people that will be swept away and helping elect Trump by voting 3rd party (or not voting) is simply NOT ACCEPTABLE TO ME!

(95,337 posts)All the infighting was nauseating in the primaries but in the end the Obama people and the Clinton people united to help get Obama elected. And the disgruntled Hillary people who felt like they wanted to 'Take their ball and go home' - we didn't miss them one bit. In the end I don't think that many left disgruntled. When Hillary came out and supported Obama, her followers supported him too.

(95,337 posts)I'm not a selfish prick. My own personal political stances are not so high and mighty that I would think my vote is way more important than the Civil Rights of every American Citizen in this country. I don't know what to expect with Hillary Clinton as President but I do know it would be extremely WAY BETTER for Civil Rights with her in the White House than with Donald Trump.
If I want to change the country I need to start fighting for those other elections too. And we need to get Gerrymandering made illegal, fix voter rights - then we can change the country.

(24,324 posts)Well I do have a prick. I will agree with that. Although I probably would not say I have been selfish with it, for better or worse. But that could be another thread.
There are different truths at different levels, just as there are different kinds of intelligences.
There is mental intelligence, feeling intelligence, physical intelligence....and each of those also have the same breakdowns..ie..the feeling, mental and physical parts of mental intelligence...and so forth.
The lowest part of each of the 3 main intelligences is the physical part.
Referring to me as a selfish prick comes from the physical part of (your) feeling intelligence.
A rather lower functioning part of the human organism.

(95,337 posts)Alot of bullshit to justify why you'd be happy with an asshole like Trump in the White House killing the Civil Rights for millions just because your candidate didn't win.

The sad thing is in the end I'm grateful I live in the Northeast and for that matter Delaware, where I know state laws will protect me on some levels and maintain civil rights for all Delawareans. But I know if we allow for state law to rule the country then there will be states that will create 2nd & 3rd tier citizenship for those that are deemed 'unacceptable' by so-called Christian Standards. And Christian Sharia laws will overtake the Constitution. I fight for the democrats because all of us deserve to be treated as equals in this country and not because of what state we happen to live.

(113,043 posts)Wisconsin folks are saying the same. Swing states were targeted with the most onerous voting restrictions and the most extreme gerrymandering.
We are left-leaning states forced to live under far right rule.

LynneSin
(95,337 posts)Edsel was more of a marketing failure whereas the Corvair had serious design issues that were dangerous to those who drove it.
If I was forced to pick one I'd be ok with an Edsel because if anything it's kinda a classic and I know that the Corvair was actually dangerous.

(47,397 posts)into the down-ballot races, instead of tearing our presidential candidates to pieces. A Dem in the White House is not enough to undo all the damage that republicans have done. Democrats really need to get their priorities in order, I'm quite sure the republicans are.
LynneSin
(95,337 posts)Honestly, let's say Bernie wins the nomination. Does he think Congress would magically change and suddenly Paul Ryan and Mitch McConnell would be like ' What can we do to make you the absolutely best president in the world?'. I mean even if we were to manage to overtake the Senate (feasible) and the House (unlikely), those 2 would do everything to undermine a democratic president in hopes they could boot him in 2020.
If all I cared about was the Presidency I'd campaign in Delaware close to home. But we have a hot senate race up in Pennsylvania and I plan on helping get out the vote to not only keep Pennsylvania Blue for the White House but to win a Senate seat pickup too!
Republicans aren't always as dumb as they look. When we were all basking in the glow of our two presidential victories, they were turning governorships, state legislatures, and congress red. Add to that the fact that many Dems tend to skip Mid-term elections. Republicans tend to be low-information voters, but they vote religiously. Their ignorance is offset by their hive-mind consistency.

We're not talking primaries here we are talking General Election. And maybe I wouldn't have even made this post if it was someone like Marco Rubio or John Kascish on the ticket - Republicans who I would not support but I do not consider extremely dangerous to this country.
You want better candidates then we need to get rid of Gerrymandering, Citizen United and these restrictive Voter ID bills. They will only get worse with someone like Trump in the White House.
At least with Hillary we will get people on the courts that can help us. Once those laws are corrected we might see better races for Senate and the House and can make this country go forward.
I look at it this way, DU promotes the Democratic Candidate for the election so I won't have to worry about the 'I won't vote for XXXXX Democratic Nominee' after the primaries are done.

(45,251 posts)about the long term game versus the short term game are the few voters in the purple states. Yet billions will be spent. It's so sickening.
LynneSin
(95,337 posts)I could write in just about any name and it won't matter where I live. And honestly, if Trump won it probably won't have too much of an impact because I would suspect the GOP would push things back to 'States Rights' which means I live in a very blue state that should be safe from nut jobs gaining control.
But I think it's selfish to say 'Hey I'm set for life screw the rest of the country'. I know there are amazing people in those red states who are trying their hardest to get a better government and it won't happen if we blue state voters say 'Screw em, let the Red States suffer'.
My biggest issue right now is Gerrymandering with Voter Rights and overturning Citizens United very close behind that. The combination of these 2 will ensure that the GOP and religious right can keep control of this country even though there are more registered Democrats in this country. If we can these horrible laws overturned then we will see great strides in Democracy again and a government that works for the people. And the only way this will happen is if we keep a Democrat in the White House that will pick the next couple of Supreme Court justices.
Once that happens things will get better. Texas is a blue state. But it's hard to be a blue state when it's gerrymandered to death and it's frustrating for voters when their vote means nothing because their districts are designed to ensure their crappy representative gets re-elected safely over and over again.
We can make a change but not if we give up on the White House because the candidate we supported in the primaries didn't win. And btw the one I chose to support opted out (Joe Biden) so I'm on team Blue!

(13,964 posts)I hate when people say that it will be just as bad under Clinton because the economy will still suck and favor the 1%. Well yeah I kind of agree with that. HOWEVER, Hillary is damn great on civil rights and at least under her,POC, women, LGBT won't have to worry about Civil Rights regressing back to the 1950's. So yeah, I'll gladly pull that lever for Clinton when the time comes.

Supreme Court because we cannot fix this country until we get rid of Gerrymandering, Citizen United and racist Voter ID laws.

(6,282 posts)This is certainly true. You can't post things here which would convince you not to vote Democratic. In fact, they'd be hidden straight away and you'd be booted off the site.
However, there are excellent arguments to be made. You can't just make them here. Well put.
