2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumShare this far and wide. Californians' have until May 23 to fix their voter registration!!!
http://usuncut.com/politics/california-primary-independents/Apparently a majority of (AIP) members have registered with the party in error, as a survey of registered members found that about 73% of members polled did not realize they had joined the party.
...
This has ominous repercussions for confused would-be independent voters. The Democratic primary in California allows unaffiliated voters to participate, but membership in the AIP would exclude them from this process according to the Democratic Partys primary rules in the state. Currently, only registered Democrats and those with no party preference marked are allowed to vote in the Democratic primary.
California voters have until May 23 to change their registration. You can check your registration here: http://www.sos.ca.gov/elections/registration-status/
I am not advocating that anyone registers Independent, just putting out a warning for any who may have tried to and made this mistake.

(16,230 posts)These people think that they're registered with no party preference when in fact they're not. People need to be made aware that there's a good chance that they misunderstood the registration form and that they need to double-check their registration and change it if necessary as soon as possible.

(14,274 posts)Even though I support Hillary, I don't believe anyone should be disenfranchised ever.

(16,230 posts)They could have made this mistake also if for some reason they didn't want to register as a Democrat.

(1,580 posts)I heard about this three weeks ago but heard people were on it. I am a Hilliary supporter but I want everyone who can vote to vote. I am not for Republucans voting in democratic primaries to disrupt democratic nominee, however. When I was lurking on a site about a poll about likely voters I wondered if it had been cleared up, so I checked it out on npr around 75% not in right party. The thread had disintigrated into insults so when I posted the problem it was kind of mean post. I posted another time in another thread. Whenever I post in a thread I try to bring it up.

(10,132 posts)Sample ballots started going out to registered voters this week (Mr. Retro got his, haven't got mine yet): it says DEM on it, or it contains a listing with Sanders and Clinton and a few others, you should be ok. If it says NP, you can request a Democratic ballot either in person at the polling place or one of the early voting locations, or by sending back the mail-in ballot request form.
If it says anything else, like REP or LIB or A-I, and you want to vote for Sanders or Clinton, you will need to reregister asap.
