2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumI received a call from the Sanders campaign
Asking me how I was going to vote. The problem is, I've never given my telephone number to any of the presidential campaigns and when I registered to vote 13 years ago it was under a different phone number that I no longer have. How did the Sanders campaign get my telephone number? I'm really not pleased about receiving unsolicited calls like that.

(8,168 posts)Usual ad hominem from those who seem to want to drive people far, far away from Bernie. I like him in spite of his more fervent supporters.

(12,689 posts)I have volunteered with congressional campaigns who had my telephone number, so it's possible information was somehow skimmed from there. Very odd.

(12,689 posts)Cell numbers are unlisted and quite hard to get without data mining. I don't know what happened, but I was surprised to get a call.

in fact before my phone rings the caller gets a message that i do not take calls from solicitors. it really rews up the robo calls.

(1,820 posts)Heck I am on the Do Not Call list and I still get calls from solicitors from all kinds of things.
If you are in the phone book or have submitted your phone number for anything you can be on a list that can be sold.
If unsolicited calls bother you you will be very frustrated for the rest of your life. Best just to hang up and not let it make you insane.
For me I hate the Patriot Act and feel that is far more of an invasion.

(23,156 posts)A couple of years ago a friend of mine totally freaked out at the fact that basic information about her: name, address, and phone number, was readily accessible on the internet.
There are lots, and lots of ways the campaign might have gotten your phone number. So just get over it. Or don't answer your phone if you don't recognize the number at the other end, or simply let all calls go to voice mail.

(12,689 posts)It's not a huge deal, I was just posting to see if anyone else had received a call like that.

(23,156 posts)I also am supposed to be on the Do Not Call List, but apparently it's somewhat voluntary for organizations to even bother with it. And yes, if I got a call from the Clinton campaign I'd cheerfully assure them I'm voting for Bernie.
Actually, last week I got two separate calls polling my voting preference. One was straightforward would I be voting D or R, then which candidate. The second one seemed to already know I'm a Democrat, and after asking me if I'd vote for Hillary or Bernie, went on to ask me about candidates running for local office.

(12,689 posts)That's no big revelation. I was just speculating. Sanders wouldn't directly be to blame anyway, because sometimes staff does stupid things.
Duckhunter935
(16,974 posts)NEVER gave any information to ANY of the campaigns, so that could not have been a cause. You are just speculating and shit stirring. Typical for some here.

Y'all are so cute with your copycatting. Just like Hillary imitating Bernie and Warren (for as long as the primaries last, anyway ).

(47,803 posts)and among the endless e-mails I started instantly receiving from every imaginable things remotely associated with the Democratic party, I got one from the Clinton Victory committee asking me to "sign a petition" on the Supreme Court nomination.....which was skillfully designed ploy to bget my name into her supporters base.

(22,976 posts)It may be that you simply live in a neighborhood that fits the demographic profile of the average Democratic voter. Or maybe you gave $5.00 to some liberal non-profit org at some point in the past. All of which leaves a trail of specific identifiers that are used to generate rosters of potential prospects, i.e., you.
There are untold businesses that market your data to various non-profit, political and commercial interests; each of these, in turn, are likely to re-market your data as well. Getting your phone number is easy when you can locate addresses via data-mining resources.
If you've attended college, bought a car, or even filled out the warranty card on so much as a toaster, you're on multiple lists, which are marketed to data miners.

(3,919 posts)let calls go to message during elections. at least they identified themselves. it is the call from undisclosed "survey" sponsors that irk me.
p.s. call your county voter registrar to ask if the local democratic party has a list of voters with your phone number on it.
