Please Don’t Pretend Hillary’s Negatives Are the Same as Trump’s

Source: BNR, Peter Daou

The media’s favorite new talking point is that Hillary and Donald Trump have one thing in common: they are both deeply disliked candidates. That false equivalence only works if you strip away the context: Trump is disliked because of what he has done; Hillary is disliked because of what has been done to her; Trump is disliked because of who he is; Hillary is disliked because of who she’s falsely portrayed to be.

Let’s take the names Trump and Clinton out of the picture and try a thought experiment.

Candidate A spends a year basking in unashamed bigotry, demeaning and degrading women, lying incessantly, insulting rivals, and boasting and bloviating like a schoolyard bully.

Candidate B spends a year spreading a message of love and kindness, working to help women and children, promoting fairness and tolerance, and enduring an unjustified character assault of colossal proportions.

Does anyone really believe it’s the same thing when Candidate A is disliked for who he actually is and Candidate B is disliked because she’s lied about, insulted and smeared?

Trump developed his all on his own in just 9 months time. Total apples and oranges.

"probable net economic effect, my ass.

One candidate thinks it a good idea to default on the national debt, so we can "negotiate" a lower rate.

If you're trying to win an election, it doesn't really matter why people don't like you and won't vote for you, it only matters that people don't like you and won't vote for you.

They have been in place much longer and are deeply set. They aren't going to be reversed. And contrary to the spin in the article, they are based in good part on her actions, not just the right wing attacks.

Trump's are more recent and he has a chance to lessen them by rebranding himself for the GE. Whether he tries that or not is the issue.

The wishful thinking on Hillary is not surprising, her supporters can't see any negatives.

they have different negatives but the effect comes across the same.

I couldn't disagree more. Hillary's actions and statements are the core causes of her unpopularity: warmongering, venality, shameless flip-flopping, advocacy of environmental disasters like fracking, hand-in-hand relationship with the Wall Street criminals that fucked over our economy...the list goes on and on. The more an objective person knows about HRC, the less they like her.

Trump has earned his unpopularity with horrible, clueless statements. Those statements alone disqualify him in my reckoning. He has no political record to either approve of or reject.

Sorry, but the "Hillary as innocent victim" spin is just transparently absurd.
