Hillary Clinton just issued a challenge to progressives. They should take her up on it.

On Face the Nation, Hillary Clinton was asked if she’s trying to nudge Bernie Sanders out of the race, and offered a reply that, at first hearing, sounded like a standard-issue denial. But buried in her answer was an interesting challenge to progressives — one that suggests a way for the Sanders movement to reconstitute and reinvent itself after the primaries are over:

“I’m three million votes ahead of Senator Sanders, nearly 300 pledged delegates ahead of him. He has to make his own mind up.

“But I was very heartened to hear him say last week that he is going to work seven days a week to make sure Donald Trump doesn’t become president. And I want to unify the party. I see a great role and opportunity for him and his supporters to be part of that unified party, to move into not just November to win the election against Donald Trump, but to then govern based on the progressive goals that he and I share.

<snip>

Like a Ryan of the left, Sanders will have an opportunity to cajole (and if need be, push) Democrats in a more progressive direction, but he can also serve as a bulwark against regressive policymaking, the same way conservatives have time and again stopped Republican leaders from consorting with Democrats on any measure that carries a whiff of liberalism. If and when President Clinton forges illiberal compromises with Republican leaders, Sanders will be one of the only people in Congress with a constituency wide enough to make other Democratic members consider rebelling against the leader of their party.

Because when we compromise, even a little, they take a fucking yard.

We must not perpetuate that which we seek to end.

I'm out of patience and I will not go quietly.

work down from there. Kinda like the public option being taken off the table. Bernie would never do that. He will start very high and his compromises would be exactly what he/we want.

Give the Republicans everything they want, and they will pass it while whining that Democrats didn't give in enough.

Ban on abortions? Sure, they will get behind that and whine that birth control isn't banned.

Privatize Social Security? Sure, they will get behind that and whine that Medicare still exists.

Hamstring EPA regulations to the point where they are barely able to crawl? Sure, they will get behind that and whine that chemical companies can't pollute with abandon.

Guess what will happen then? Those three come to pass with the massive repercussions that everyone that can see past the end of their noses can see coming from a mile away, and guess who gets blamed? The President was the one that signed it into law!!!!!

How about:
"And I want to unify the party. I see a great role and opportunity for him and his supporters to be part of that unified party, to move into not just November to win the election against Donald Trump, but to then govern based on the progressive goals that he and I share. A unified party should oppose Trump in the general election. With the help of Sen Sanders supporters we can govern with the progressive goals that the senator and I share."

Every statement Clinton makes is delivered as if she's being gracious and tolerant to allow you to wear her pin, and sick and tired of presumptuous people who want to know something about policy. As if!

I do not accept that premise. She is a horrible candidate whose numbers are dropping day by day. I interpret Bernie's statement about working tirelessly to defeat Trump is first by defeating Hillary (because she will lose to Trump) and then defeat Trump himself.

Hillary will lose to Trump! If you are serious about beating Trump you have to defeat Hillary first, or you will LOSE.
