2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumThis Bernie Bro Is With Her
Within the past few weeks, the 2016 presidential election has taken clearer shape. Donald Trumps rivals have all cowered and bowed out, making him the likely nominee for the Republicans. Hillary Clinton is the presumptive nominee for the Democratic Party, although Bernie Sanders has not yet begun to give up.
I supported Sanders and voted for him in the Illinois primary. I think that on the issues, he has proven himself to be bold, sincere and forward-thinking. I think that his campaign has molded Clintons in a positive way. But a nomination is not realistic. And I will vote for Clinton and the Democrats.
Clinton has been in politics for a long time, and while she doesnt have the consistency of Sanderss record, she was a very liberal senator during her time in Congress. She was a senator during the dark ages of George W. Bushs presidency, when it was often hard to speak ones mind. The entire country was deranged, so any missteps then should be understood as a product of the time. As a secretary of state, she performed valiantly. She does her homework, is a strategic thinker, has the savvy to strengthen relationships with our allies and would break ground as the first female president.
Its important that the Dems win this presidency and retake the Senate. As the physicist Niels Bohr noted, Its hard to make predictions, especially about the future. Right now, the electoral map favors Hillary Clinton. But polling has been notoriously unreliable this election cycle. So let me toss whatever influence I have into imploring you the reader to vote against Trump and everything he represents. (Including, by the way, a foreign policy advisor who is a Knight of Malta, which influenced the George W. Bush administration, as I previously reported.)

It's really pretty simple.

(1,511 posts)Just because you have a "D" in your name does not make you a good person...I am voting for a person that holds democratic values, not a wolf wearing the clothes of one. Equating to black and white id a disservice to the country and is the first step towards a more corrupt future.

(42,641 posts)or something in any way anomalous in her record, is incorrect, but I agree that in the general election, the goal should be to have a huge Democratic win, and then to push for change. If the Sanders enthusiasm is harnessed into political pressure, something that President Obama never did, than Sanders and the country could end up being the long term winner.

(24,411 posts)Wow, talk about rose-colored glasses. Clinton is wayyyy farther to the right than Obama on foreign policy, reigning in Wall Street, fracking, and she seems to be against single payer--which was supposed to be the next step, after Obamacare.
Obama was liberal on some issues, and he certainly has kept Hlllary Clinton from "doing stupid shit" when it comes to foreign policy. However, I would say that liberals didn't fare too well on many issues. And Clinton is even further right than Obama. It's clear that the Clintons share a disdain for liberals/Bernie supporters. Clinton is hostile toward us.
How anyone could truly believe that we could affect the changes we want, with HRC in the White House--is beyond me.
guillaumeb
(42,641 posts)a savior is unrealistic. Even if Sanders became the eventual nominee, and even if he were to be elected, the battle would have just begun.
I agree that HRC is a Democrat in the mold of William Clinton and Barack Obama, but at the least the SCOTUS nominees would be better than any GOP nominees.

(24,411 posts)into corruption and toward total Fascism.
We will most likely go to war with Iran.
We're on the brink. We either pull this country back now from a total corrupt takeover of our government; or we slide into very dark times. Hillary Clinton is horrendously corrupt. She'll use the Presidency as a playground where her rich and powerful special-interest friends will gain further power and infiltration into our democracy.
The stakes are so high.
If it was between Bernie and Obama or Bernie and Biden--I wouldn't be so concerned.
She's the absolute worst.
guillaumeb
(42,641 posts)But President Cheney would have been an ideal "worst" candidate.
My feeling is that most politicians are generally as progressive as they have to be. If there is enough push, a politician will go in that direction. It is up to voters to provide that push.

(24,411 posts)Because the vast majority in this county do not like Hillary Clinton. 70 percent of Americans do not find her trustworthy. Her likeability ratings are in the toilet and close to Donald Trump's stats.
We're a big group! What can I say? The vast majority in this country hates Lima Beans too. Doesn't mean that every person who hates Lima beans is the same, right?
The left doesn't like her policies and they don't trust her; she polls abysmally with Independents and Ted Kruz types think that she killed Vince Foster and that Chelsea Clinton is Web Hubble's daughter.
It's a big, big club beyond the Hillary bubble.

This is obvious ratfuckery. He's no more a former Bernie supporter that the author of this OP. MAYBE Hillary CAN dream big, too - but her dreams are of a much less liberal or selfless variety. Neocon dreams.
Nailed it.
Full of perfume, lacking any substance what-so-ever.
Hillary had no problem "speaking her mind" while turning her back on the majority of Democrats and helping Bush and the Warmongers get their WAR on.
She spoke her mind quite openly, cheer leading FOR the Invasion and publicly celebrating.

We used to have s few Liberal Senators, but they were either killed, or steamrolled out of office by lack of support from Party Establishment.

In the year of the Sandy Hook massacre, Secretary Clinton approved $120 million in sales for the companies that made the murder weapons Adam Lanza used to kill 20 children and 6 adults, including a $4 million sale for gun maker Remington.
On 14 April 2016 a judge ruled that the Sandy Hook families lawsuit against gunmaker Remington Arms can move forward. Hillary Clinton is using the massacre for political gain in the presidential campaign. At the Univision debate in March, Clinton said you want to talk about corporate greed? The gun manufacturers sell guns to make as much money as they can make. But a newly identified Pentagon document shows that Clinton herself aided corporate greed of Remington. (A summary table of Clinton-approved 2012 gun and ammunition sales is included at the bottom of this blog page.)
The Pentagon document also shows Clinton that year approved over $100 million dollars ($116,160,367.19 by my count) in ammunition sales by Alliant Techsystems, the parent company of Savage Arms, which makes the MK II-F bolt action rifle Lanza used to kill his mother. I have not seen reporting on who manufactured the AR-15 ammunition used by Lanza. Alliants subsidiary Federal Cartidge sells ammunition for AR-15 rifles in boxes of 100; Lanza took 300 rounds of Ar-15 ammunition to the school.

(6,280 posts)... A common goal for everyone here at Democratic Underground to make sure a Democrat is elected as president. I do not agree with the assertion by some here that it would be better for Hillary Clinton to be defeated if she is the nominee and burn any progress that has been made to the ground. If that happens it will be a much longer road to get to where we want to be.
