Benchmark Politics founder and BNR polling analyst looks at the trajectory of the Hillary-Trump race.
A cursory search of articles on Google News will reveal thousands of articles with a narrative: that the race between Hillary and Trump is closing, and that Trump is poised to be competitive in the general election.

Most of these articles are written about a single poll or a single pollster, with phrases such as “according to one general election match-up poll” or “these new state polls show a close race.” Of course, no single poll should ever be looked at in isolation – no election forecaster would ever try to make a prediction with a single data point and neither should you. This is the purpose of poll aggregation sites and trend lines.

We searched through all of the data to determine what the true state of the race is, and a single narrative has emerged — not only is the general election race not closing, it has widened in Hillary’s favor in recent months.

Disaffected Republicans have fallen into three groups so far. Some vowed never to vote for Trump, some said they will abandon the Republican Party entirely and some said they will actively support Clinton instead.

For those who are casting their ballots for Clinton in the fall, she appears merely as the lesser of two evils.

“At least it’s not going to disgrace the nation on the first day,” a former senior official in the George W. Bush administration said of voting for Clinton.

(snip)

Ben Howe, a contributing editor at conservative website Red State, tweeted before Cruz dropped out, “I am a fiscal conservative and I am a social conservative. That will not change. But I will not vote for an egomaniacal authoritarian. Nope.” And then he followed simply with the Clinton campaign’s hashtag: #ImWithHer.

Mike Treiser, a former staffer on Mitt Romney’s presidential campaign, wrote on Facebook: “In the face of bigotry, hatred, violence, and small-mindedness, this time, I’m with her.”

Mark Salter, a former strategist for John McCain, also announced on social media before the Indiana results rolled in that he would support Clinton.

You've got some strange bedfellows, Camp Clinton.

11. Clinton Campaign to Republican Donors: Hillary Shares Your Values
Sun May 15, 2016, 03:00 AM

Indeed, Jeb Bush, along his father and brother, have vowed not to back the presumptive Republican nominee, Donald Trump. Assuming no third party candidate emerges to soak up the fundraising dollars of former Bush backers, Clinton is positioning herself as the deserving recipient.

In doing so, her campaign is signaling to Republican donors that, as Ben White puts it, Hillary "represents your values better than Trump."

This is a striking admission — one that comes in the midst of an ongoing contest with an opponent, Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, who has questioned Clinton's commitment to progressive causes and has criticized her for caving under the temptations of corporate cash.

Rhetorically, Clinton has agreed with the notion that money is corrupting. So much so, in fact, that in 2008 she attacked then-Senator Obama for his reliance on money from employees of oil companies. But she has also argued, sometimes in the same breath, that she is above the laws of political gravity.
