The dark side of the American Dream. If anyone can make it, then if you do you deserve it and if you are poor it's something wrong with you. Add in the twisted Calvinist "Wealth means God favors you, being poor means you must have done something he disapproves of" and fighting wealth/income inequality becomes really, really hard.

machines, technology, etc., most of that goes to the people investing the money and taking the risk. I'd like to see workers and society get a piece of that, but -- the way things are right now -- if you want a piece of the increase in productivity, which is mostly from investing capital and taking risk nowadays, you are going to have to invest capital, or invest in improving your skills, until things change. That's the reality, good or bad. I agree that it would be a lot easier to accept that if folks on the bottom were paid much better. I think we are close to accomplishing big improvements in that respect.
