2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumWill the parties change to closed primaries for 2020
I am a big proponent of closed primaries--- you should only be allowed to vote in your party's primary if you are a registered Democrat or a registered Republican. Given 2016 do you think the parties will move to closed primaries?

(11,365 posts)I just think the caucus states should be later in the process...after all the primary states are completed.
The big primary states shouldn't be at the end of the process...they should be early in the process

(3,431 posts)because the legislature of the state implement
primaries and PAY for them with tax money.
In 09, right after the big recession my state switched
back to caucuses, because the primaries were too
expensive. So these were closed caucuses.
After this years debacle the legislature debated to
go back to primaries, but could not agree on open vs
closed.
I expect - with petitions circulating already - that we
will find that question on the ballot in November. Good,
let the people decide.

(11,619 posts)The following three parties notified the Secretary of State that they have chosen not to allow NPP voters to request their partys presidential ballot participate in their presidential primary election:
Republican
Green
Peace & Freedom
So I doubt they will be the largest party.

(24,692 posts)Stage 1 in October would - this year - pit Trump, Clinton, Sanders and anyone else against each other.
The top 2 in the first round then stage 1 then face off in the election in November. If you candidate finishes third in the first stage, too bad. You had your chance.
Everyone can vote in both stages - the ultimate open primary. France does it this way as do many other countries.

(11,197 posts)a couple weeks ago somewhere on this very site. The establishment wins when there are closed primaries. That has been quite obvious to everyone this primary season, and a point I am sure not missed by the neocons. You would have to be sans brain to not have seen this coming.
