Clinton is Not Telling the Truth on Auto Bailout
May 16, 2016
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders campaign spokesman on Monday said Hillary Clinton should stop trying to distort the truth about Sanders support for legislation to help carmakers and auto workers.
Campaigning in Kentucky before Tuesdays primary election, Clinton repeated her false claim that Sanders did not vote to fund an auto industry aid package in 2008. In fact, Sanders voted for a $14 billion aid package which passed the House of Representatives on Dec. 10, 2008. When that bill ran into a Senate Republican roadblock, the White House turned to a separate Wall Street bailout fund for loans to the auto industry.
It is absolutely untrue to say that Sen. Sanders voted against helping the automobile industry and auto workers, said Sanders spokesman Michael Briggs. Secretary Clinton first made this false claim before the Michigan primary. She now is recycling the erroneous charge in Kentucky. Once again, Secretary Clinton is simply not telling the truth.
When Clinton first mischaracterized Sanders position before Michigans March 8 primary, The Washington Post said Clinton was trying to deceive voters and that she glosses over a lot . . . including the fact that Sanders is actually on the record as supporting the auto bailout. He even voted for it. The Post also said of Clinton, It seems like shes willing to take the gamble that fact checkers may call her out for her tactic but that voters wont.
Unlike Clinton, Sanders did vote against bailing out big banks after the 2008 economic collapse. It is true that Sen. Sanders voted against bailing out the crooks on Wall Street whose illegal behavior and greed brought this economy into the worst downturn since the 1930s, Briggs said.

Folding an auto bailout into the Wall Street bill enabled the bi-partisan Democrats and Republicans to get the trillion dollar handout to Wall Street banksters with an easy majority vote without a filibuster. That was the catch and gimmick used that not all Democratic Senators were willing to support.

(2,054 posts)But most Democrats and Republican Senators wanted to help out their pals on Wall Street. They came first.
The Democrats controlled the Senate and they failed to use their control to pass a clean auto bailout bill.

If that's what a socialist and a progressive does then shouldn't the left want to lean away from that?

(15,315 posts)The truth is, Bernie is really not all that much better than Hillary. He's an American politician who has to work in the American political system just as much as she does. Both of them could do better but our system makes that really hard. Most Americans are like that old analogy of the frogs in the boiling pot. We just don't realize how bad it is.

(56,582 posts)He voted for a bill that didn't pass, and voted against the bill that did pass and bailed out the automakers. Call me crazy, but that seems pretty clearly to be a vote, and it seems to have been against the auto bailout.

(2,054 posts)It appears that most Senators were mainly concerned about working with Republicans to pass a Wall Street bailout bill and getting it easily passed by including some auto bailout funds.
He did not vote for that Wall Street bailout bill in the Senate.
I'm glad he didn't.
And nine Democratic Senators along with fifteen Republicans joined Sanders in voting against that Wall Street bill.

(1,901 posts)the congressional record lies and Bernie never does when he says things that don't match the record.
The auto bailout funds came from a bill that Bernie voted against. Simple fact. Desperate Bernie lies to squeeze money from people he knows are not bright or literate enough to read the record and understand the words.
