His strategy was to rely on "favorite son" candidates in big-state primaries. Those stand-ins all announced Humphrey as their choice on the very first ballot.
Eugene McCarthy never united behind the nominee, and his followers drew 6,000 federal troops and 18,000 National Guard reservists to try to keep the peace at their "protests" in Grant Park.

(9,385 posts)and maybe the point should be that the repression at the convention wasn't a very good idea. If Humphrey had not tried to squelch the protesters, and had gone anti-war as they wanted, he most likely would have won because Nixon masqueraded as the "peace candidate" of all things, and that's how he won.
That's if anybody gives a damn about not making the same mistake, which I very much doubt. Those who don't learn from the past... (you know the rest).
