Late Super PAC Ad Buy Urges African Americans In Ohio To Vote Republican Because Lincoln Freed The Slaves
In the final days of the campaign in Ohio, the stops have been pulled out in the scramble to eke out a win. And that means one super PAC calling on African Americans to vote against President Obama because Abraham Lincoln freed the slaves.
Cable viewers in several markets across the state are being treated to ads by an obscure self-described alternative conservative super PAC called the Empower Citizens Network. One of the groups ads accuses Obama and Democrats of imploding the economy by forcing mortgage companies to lend to unqualified borrowers while the Soviet national anthem plays. Another promises welfare recipients that Republicans can save your money source by reducing regulations on business.
And then theres the ad which one viewer told TPM is airing in the Columbus area on cable. Our source caught it a couple of times on MSNBC. That ad is the Empower Citizens Network spot that tells African Americans its a lie that Democrats support them and cites the Emancipation Proclamation as evidence.
Details on Empower Citizens Network are sketchy. It was formed in June, according to its FEC filing, but its quarterly filings in July and October showed the group had neither raised nor spent any money. FEC filings made by the group last week (here and here) show it spending about $98,000 on campaign advertising in Ohio, mostly for newspaper ads.

they are all over the place. they were willing to run an non-christian
because the party "elites" insisted it was the only way to win and that
is going to cause a backlash within the base.

The article goes on saying Romney is polling 5.5% of the black vote.
Much too high.

(2 posts)Great quote. It was JC (Julius Caesar) Watts, Sr. talking to JC Watts, Jr. when Junior announced he was switching parties. I heard it: "A black man voting Republican is like a chicken voting for the Colonel."

(35,701 posts)Besides, Abraham Lincoln would likely be a Democrat if he were alive today. After all, he signed the Transcontinental Railway Act, the Homestead Act, and the Morrill Act, which set up the Land Grant Colleges. Sounds more like FDR than Ronald Reagan.

(1,574 posts)The core of the modern Republican party is made up of the descendants of people that hated Lincoln. The recent base of the party is mainly the old confederate states. The change came when the northeastern democratic pary plus LBJ from Texas started pushing for equal voting rights in the south and actually signed the voting rights act. This prompted the south to transition from being democrats (dixiecrats) to the modern republicans. Btw why be part of a party that actively discourages minority voting if you are the one being targeted?

(48,955 posts)Er - GOP operatives - you have just demonstrated how distant your world view is from people who live in it - esp those you are targeting.
What this message suggests: Forget our words, the policies we promote, and all of your real world experiences. Go back 160+ years, and trust us - because we have the same party affiliation of that guy... 160+ years ago.
Number of undecided voters won over? 0.
I hope they spent millions on this message. Not only is it ineffective, it is offensive and is likely to push fence sitters either no where (no new votes), or in the other direction due to the ignorance and displayed contempt for the intelligence of voters.

(2,404 posts)voting for the modern day Republican party?
An interesting fact about Lincoln~ while he personally was very much anti-slavery, his goal during the Civil War was preservation of the Union.
He said that if he could preserve the Union and free the slaves he would do it, but that if he could preserve the Union without freeing the slaves, he would do that also.
So that's a very interesting angle for them to attempt.

Or vote Democratic because the incumbent is a black guy who's a great president.
