We should keep in mind that in 2008 Clinton was in a worse position after the May 6 primaries

in terms of pledged delegates than Bernie is today. She was 164 pledged delegates behind Obama with only 217 remaining. (That does not count Michigan and Florida, which were eventually awarded half of their delegates, with 126 going to Clinton and 74 to Obama). It was already clear in March that there would be no revote in Michigan and Florida, and so there was no way she could pick up enough of those delegates to pass Obama. Basically, she didn't have a snowball's chance in hell, but she stayed in for another month, until all the primaries were over.

Also noteworthy: After she and Obama both promised not to participate in Michigan, she put her name on the ballot (Obama did not), and she tried at first to get the results in Michigan to stand. But by May 6 it was clear that the DNC would not help her screw over Obama in Michigan and so, barring something really crazy happening, Obama's lead in pledged delegates was insurmountable.
