2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumDo you really think Republicans aren't going to unite behind Trump?
Trump will give them something Republican voters have longed for - he will demolish the Clintons and a good portion of the Democratic Party along with them.
The more Trump hammers Clinton, the more they will unite.

(12,685 posts)Republican women will be a lot easier to turn away from Clinton than the Democrats because they have no party loyalty to the Dems and are more likely to believe what is said.
When I look at Trumps problem with women vs Hillary, I think she has a MUCH larger problem.

It really just blows my mind that people want to relive this:

If they attack Hillary, maybe not so much.

Just have to clear the conventions and let the dust settle a bit on our side.
But, I am pretty sure that he won't be able to help himself from acting like a complete jackass toward Hillary while she acts like an adult.
Most likely, that pushes that 15% or so uncommitted now more to her than him.

(17,064 posts)Trump may not be many Republicans favored candidate, but they'll crawl over broken glass and red-hot coals to vote against Clinton. In the meantime, Clinton and her surrogates have gone out of their way to insult, mock, and antagonize Democratic and Independent Ssnders supporters. Naturally, many now refuse to vote for Clinton under any circumstances...who can blame them? What the Clinton fan club is in complete and utter denial about is that most Sanders supporters see little difference between her and Trump. There's no bridging that gap.

(6,974 posts)KNEW the GOP would unite behind Trump. ALWAYS.
As for Sanders supporters not voting for Hillary Clinton, they must do what their conscience tells them to and if NOT voting for Clinton is what they feel, then don't vote for her. Simple as that.

(56,582 posts)At least compared to Republicans generally. But "fairly well" means 18% or so, and that's a small demographic to begin with. That won't get him there, though. He'll be in single digits among African Americans, east Asians, and Latinos, and he can't overcome that.

It often seems there is no one more right wing than a recent immigrant, they feel that it is "American" to be a winger and culturally they usually lean quite conservative.

(1,732 posts)would rather sit naked on a frozen pond in Siberia than ever step foot in a voting booth and pull a lever or push a touchscreen for Hillary Clinton. We've had disaster Republicans in office before, we don't need another one in Hillary Clinton. We can't afford more endless war and disastrous trade policies she's so eager to set forth on the nation.

(7,723 posts)not to mention the racism, and the massive financial uncertainty and complete lack of knowledge of world affairs. Anyone who think Trump wouldn't be a complete disaster and take this country down as POTUS is delusional. Hillary would at least be status quo.

(47,209 posts)because our lives actually do depend on it. Have for a long time. We are the Dem base, and will not allow Trump to happen.

(24,692 posts)Their own post-mortem on 2012 was that they could not win the presidency with essentially a 'whites-only' campaign strategy - that they had to appeal more to women and minorities who are not part of the natural republican base.
Donald is trying to prove that post-mortem was wrong and that a 'whites-only' (largely, not totally, of course) will work at least on last time before demographics consume their party. I don't see how it works for Donald so I think our chances are good. But we have to take him very seriously because demagogues are great campaigners even when their actual policies - to the extent he has any - really suck and they would make horrible presidents.

". . .here's the thing about politics: It's not an expression of your moral purity and your ethics and your probity and your fond dreams of some utopian future. Progressive people constantly fail to get this.
The GOP has developed a genius for falling into lockstep. . . They line up behind their candidate, grit their teeth, and help him win, no matter who he is. . ."
