As a national figure, Obama was relatively unknown to a lot of voters who were starting from "the black guy with the funny name". His obvious wit and consummate professional demeanor tended to increase his appeal with exposure. People went from "I don't know anything about the guy" to "dang, he's pretty good" with exposure.

And, he was to Hillary's left politically. And didn't rate as dishonest and untrustworthy with more than half of Americans polled. Etc.

That's a core issue. If people don't believe what you're saying or trust you to keep your word, if elected....
