**NOT CONDONING**What an interesting read this ever is. It makes you think.
Enjoy.

Were basically proposing a way to fix Congress in one fell swoop, said Saikat Chakrabarti, a former Sanders staffer and Brand New Congress co-founder. A big reason people dont vote in midterms is that it currently feels very futileat best, you get one or two progressive candidates to win, but those people wont be able to do much in a Congress that is largely run by the current establishment. We are instead presenting a plan to put in a whole slate of progressive candidates at once, so voters will have a real option for big change.
We think for the first time in 100 years, and not because were special or smarter, but because of the situation with the Bernie movement, the United Progressive Party could be the first third party going from minor party status to major party status, said UPP founder Justin Renquist. We could see 30 to 50 percent of the Democratic Party, progressives, be so disgusted with this whole process and just leave We are a populist leftist reformist movement that needs to come together. Lets be the big tent party that the Democrats said they were, but are not.
From the Bottom Up
Sanders and his most ardent followers have repeatedly said that change only comes when the people demand it. Ironically, the campaign itself is a very traditional top-down institution, where the messaging is tightly scripted and the millions raised equally tightly held. The campaign has not endorsed many candidates running for federal office and has mostly told volunteers to cover the costs of creating their campaign materials. On one hand, they are very disciplinedalmost no one affiliated with the campaign or volunteering says they are free to talk to reporters. But their fiscal stinginess has also unleashed a remarkable army of self-starters whose efforts are creating a new foundation for an emerging and growing progressive movement.
The campaign, of course, believes that anyone under age 30 who they register to vote will likely support them. So late last week, they set up a San Francisco Bay Area voter registration tour of surrogate speakersled by young hip Hollywood actorsthat stopped at the major campuses. Like many campaign events, the first to appear were not these insiders, but the outside activists. That was the case at Stanford University, where Jay Blas Jacob Cabrera, who is also running for state Assembly, appeared with a variety of handouts: cards telling people how to register, voting options, and endorsements of other local progressive candidates.

(45,251 posts)One of the first people Sanders changed was Hillary and her camp! They got right away that she had to keep stepping left if she had any wish to win the primary.

I didn't say she changed but her campaign rhetoric sure has--and my post was about her campaign.

(10,650 posts)As soon as she starts the GE campaign, she'll pivot rightward, where she actually likes to be. The claim of progressivism will be gone with the wind.

Hey, so what that the party will have to rely on an influx of Trump-spooked Republicans in order to compensate for the upcoming exodus of soon-to-be ex-Democrats who remain to the left of Reagan?
As long as the "D" is there to drool over, those remaining will happily bend over and say "ah," as the saying goes.

(643 posts)It could be looking at a large portion of its voting block if a third party were to gain traction. My guess is that the powers that be will shrug it off. Introspection does not seem to be a strong suit for DNC leadership.

(643 posts)Will someone be able to pull together the independents and the other offshoot progressive groups, find a common ground, and get a new party organized? One that really represents the people, as the Democratic party should have done?

(50,566 posts)The Democratic Party has basically become the Republican Party. I'm ready to jump ship.
And I understand I probably won't last on DU very much longer because we're soon supposed to get in lockstep with the DINO Conservadem Third Way candidate.

(7,318 posts)but if the United Progressive Party is actually going to make a go of it to unite all progressives, then I may soon have a forum to go to!
I am so disheartened by the Clinton supporters here, who are perfectly fine with the corruption that just occured at the Nevada Convention, because they want their candidate to "win at all costs" even if the result is the undermining of long-standing bedrock principles of the Democratic Party and of democracy itself.
I want to work with like-minded, positive people who want to protect Democracy at all costs, not a candidate.

(7,318 posts)85% of us now on DU are Bernie supporters, and a large swath of them are progressives like me who support Bernie, because his policies mesh with their own. When Clinton becomes the nominee, we need to have a new forum up and ready to accept us so we can keep moving forward with our progressive agenda.
Skinner is a business man. This is another business opportunity like Discussionist was. He has an excellent forum 'template' already developed so he could probably have had it up and ready by Aug 1st. That was the idea, but now the UPP may soon have something ready for us too, so I'm very relieved.
I see you at JPR and am so glad it exists. I like and read JPR, but it's navigation tools are not up to snuff and so it's difficult to use and understand.

The other two administrators are Dave Allsopp, a co-founder, known as "EarlG" (of Washington, D.C.) and Brian Leitner, known as "elad" of Portland, Oregon. Allsopp and Leitner handle the articles and technical issues, respectively. Previously David Allen used to design websites for Blue Dogs/Third Way Democrats in Washington, D.C.

Gaining the Presidency may have been the best of all options, but certainly not the only. Unlike Occupy, there will have to be structure, rules, etc. That often creates power plays and disagreements, especially at the volunteer level.
But third parties are a diffficult option. I discovered that the only other party that has potential ballot rights in the 50 states is the Libertarian Party. They currently poll at 10% now and at 15% have the right to be on the ballot.

(10,993 posts)they can keep up the enthusiasm in 2018 and beyond. I also hope they can do some long-range planning and, rather than completely dislodge people like the Bay Area Congressional delegation can target disaffected voters in strong tea party areas. And I hope they realize that it will take at least a decade to build a viable, sustainable party - even the Republicans lost some big elections before they got Lincoln in office - and that the progressive college liberals of today will grow up to be the more conservative mainstream voters of tomorrow: unless they want to refight the revolution every few years they have to have a way not just to get people to vote in the federal elections now, but to keep voting for their candidates in subsequent elections.

The movement began years ago, and happens to have spurred Sanders into a presidential run. He din't suddenly decide a year ago that he'd like to be president.

(15,435 posts)down ticket candidates so have to continue to be a Democrat. Want to vote for Alan Grayson regardless of ALL the negative comments here. Thom Hartmann had a Representative named Rick Nolan on his show yesterday who fully supports Grayson and he said the Democratic Party NEEDED more people like him because he's NOT AFRAID to say what needs to be said.
Nolan was very interesting & has been a long time D from 8th District in MN and said he's worked with Bernie for many years and said he knows Bernie has co-sponsored a lot of legislation and that he let the co-sponsor take credit for the passage it. Nolan also is quite a hard working man of the people and has proposed some good legislation lately but of course knows he'll meet a buzz saw of objection!
But there are some good ones still left... just not the big names who have rolled over on us and bought the DLC/Third Way rhetoric.
ALSO, really want Tim Canova to TAKE DWS DOWN! Go Tim... he needs donations as does Bernie. I do monthly for Bernie, but not for Tim, but give what I can.

(15,435 posts)It would be BENEFICIAL if Hillary and her people would see the writing on the wall and try a little kindness for her OWN sake. It's NOT GOING AWAY!
I talked about this many months ago, and so did Bernie! All the nastiness from Hillary AND This Democratic Party will eventually backfire on them. I've never been able to understand WHY they don't get it!
BUT, they just plow along throwing people to the side of the road. I don't like to keep repeating the fact that THERE ARE many people who didn't like Hillary to begin with, BUT NOW... the list has grown and I happen to hear people say it all the time.
They think we're just posting this stuff to support Bernie or to prop him up, but they had better start canvassing quickly and find out for themselves. I've had calls from DNC & my State Democratic Party asking for donations several times and keep getting letters. I keep telling them NOT TO CALL and send the letters back telling them I'm NOT renewing my membership, but none of it stops! I've always volunteered to do what I could, but no more.
And I'm a very longtime Democrat, never anything else for at least 40 years and I'm done with them.

But they also interviewed many students and there we MANY negative replies about her. Anyway, it's on the site and you can check it out. I'm not good about "linking" stuff, but I think it can be done and posted here.
Pretty interesting, they didn't just interview women though.

In Florida one is not able to change party affiliation online. The procedure is to print out the registration form, indicate the change, and submit it to the Supervisor of Elections. Maybe I am mistaken, but I have looked into how to change party affiliation and all government sites lead to the same process.
To be clear though, if you haven't yet voted in your primary then sign up for the emails and join afterwards if feeling so inclined.
