I watched Hillary Clinton’s forces swipe Nevada: This is what the media’s not telling you

(snip)

I had wanted to be a delegate, myself, but knew I was going to be out of town during the county convention in April, so I didn’t put my hat in the ring at the February caucus, where I had served as a precinct captain for Bernie. It was my first election season in Nevada, my first caucus, and the whole process seemed wild to me, taking what was normally such a private experience—voting quietly in an individual booth—and turning it into a political game of Red Rover, people taking sides in a room, trying to sway folks to come over to their side, their candidate; it was a civil game in our precinct, but I could see how easily things could turn nasty. I was grateful my husband had volunteered himself to be a county delegate, and was excited when he got the email that he was chosen to be a state delegate, as well. Nevada has a strange three-tier system—Hillary had won a majority at the February caucus, but more Bernie delegates showed up at the county caucus, negating Hillary’s win, so the race for delegates at the state convention promised to be a tight one. I looked forward to seeing the process in action; I never expected that process would become so chaotic and surreal, although I had become used to surreal of late.

(snip)

The convention started out well the next morning. Everyone seemed excited to be there—people were decked out in their Bernie and Hillary gear, smiling, passing out buttons, bustling about. I signed a petition to bring solar energy incentives back to Nevada, feeling happy that my son could witness this whole process, witness democracy in action. He and I found a place to sit on the floor on the side of the room as my husband took his seat in the Washoe County Bernie section near the front of the hall. The chairwoman, Roberta Lange, gave a rousing welcome, reminding all of us that we were there to defeat Trump and his misogyny, his xenophobia, his hate, his lies. The room felt unified, energized, cheering as a group; I felt inspired, felt yes, we can do this together.

It wasn’t long before things took a turn. At 9:30, a full half hour before registration closed, Lange read the results of ballots that had been passed out to early arriving conventioneers regarding temporary rules for the convention, rules which would discount the results of the county convention (the second tier of the caucus process, where Bernie had won more delegates), rules which would require that all votes at the convention be decided by voice alone, and which ruled that the decision of the chairperson would be final. These temporary rules had passed with flying colors, which did not sit well with the Bernie delegates, many of whom had not been given ballots. Suddenly half the people of the room were on their feet, shouting “No!!!!” My son and I jumped to our feet as well, added our voices to the chorus. It felt good, all those voices of resistance vibrating through my body. I started to feel less like a cloud. I felt myself drop back into my body, surrounded by all these bodies yelling “No!”, feeling alive inside my skin.

Then people began to chant “Recount” and my son and I joined this call, too, throats aching, adrenaline coursing. Lange took the temporary rules to a voice vote. A hearty round of “Aye”s rose up from the Hillary side of the room, but when it was time for the “Nay” vote, the response was so loud, I felt it shake my every cell, felt it alter my heartbeat. The room was explosive with “Nay”s, roaring with it, and yet Lange decided in favor of the “Aye”s, which only set off more yelling. I thought about my dad, how once when I was a kid, I wanted to do something and my sister didn’t, and he said “If someone says no, you need to listen.” Lange definitely didn’t listen to all the “no”s in the room.

(snip)

From reports from my husband and other conventioneers, and from my own firsthand experience as my son and I wandered in and out of the hall as the day progressed, it appeared that Lange didn’t listen to much of anything the Bernie delegates had to say; she appeared not to count the votes from that side of the room; she ejected dozens of Bernie delegates who didn’t have a chance to defend their eligibility, and who, if they were allowed to stay, would have given Bernie more delegates than Hillary; she didn’t allow for a “minority report”; she cut off microphones when people challenged her.

When I read news stories about what happened that day, I don’t recognize much of what is being reported—while there was plenty of chaos, I witnessed no violence (nor did my husband or anyone else I knew at the convention). Bernie supporters were not trying to change the rules, as some journalists reported: they were justifiably outraged when the chairperson changed the rules without a majority vote, and then more outraged when, later, after a motion for a delegate recount, she shut the whole convention down with a pound of the gavel and threatened arrest to anyone who stayed in the room. So many of the news reports of the convention feel like gaslighting in that regard—stories trying to make it sound as if the Bernie delegates were a bunch of crazy nutjobs, when all they wanted was to be heard and counted.

I am not a Bernie or Bust-er—I will vote for whoever gets the Democratic nomination—but I know many Bernie supporters who would have voted for Hillary changed their minds after what they experienced that day, and my husband said that even though he’ll vote for Hillary if she becomes the nominee, it will be hard for him to do so after what happened at the convention. At a time when Democrats should be banding together to defeat the most dangerous candidate I can imagine, we are imploding, ourselves, which is terrifying. I only hope we can pull ourselves together as a party before November.

First off the email to the delegates didn't come from a Bernie supporter, it came from the party itself. Second off it was sent to both Bernie and Hillary supporters. Third it was completely accurate. Here is a copy of the email to the delegates in question:

Now here is a direct quote from the Nevada Democratic Delegate Selection Plan, page 8, 2a.

a) Exact registration times shall be set by each county’s respective convention committee. However, each convention committee shall be directed to open in-person registration for no less than three (3) hours between 4:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. on Friday, April 1st; and no less than two (2) hours prior to the convention’s call to order, while remaining open until 12:00 p.m. Where practicable, the Nevada State Democratic Party encourages county parties to use online pre-registration beginning up to 30 days prior to the county convention date. However, the use of online pre-registration does not exempt or mitigate the requirements for in-person registration set forth here.

Oh look everything in that email follows the state parties rules on when registration is supposed to happen. The 3 hour mandatory registration time on Friday was met. The 2 hours before convention convened on Saturday was met. The keeping registration open until noon on Saturday was met. The dates were correct. Once again, the email was truthful. No one was lied to. Bernie supporters didn't cheat. Large numbers of Hillary supporters just didn't bother to register for the second round. That's why they lost it.

....if you did you would not imply that just because no one in you little circle supports Clinton, no one in the state does. California is probably has one of the most diverse political climates in the country. It could be broken into at least three states and virtually no one in California would complain.

But as an indication of how out of step your little group is, here are the results of the latest California polls:

KABC/SurveyUSA 4/27-4/30 Clinton 57 Sanders 38 Clinton +19

FOX News 4/18-4/21 Clinton 48 Sanders 46 Clinton +2

CBS News/YouGov 4/13-4/15 Clinton 52 Sanders 40 Clinton +12

Gravis 4/7-4/10 Clinton 47 Sanders 41 Clinton +6

Good luck to the old socialist in California - he is going to need it.

Oh, oh...I know! Nothing! That will be because after Hillary wins California she will have cinched the nomination. (Heck, even if Sanders wins California, Hillary will cinch the Nomination that day.) You will say nothing because Skinner will flip switch and supporting Sanders will longer be allowed on DU and bashing Hillary will be forbidden. So you will either keep your trap shut about St. Bernard and muzzle you comments about Hillary or you will be shown the door. Works for me either way.

Oh well, all good things must come to and end. So you have until June 8th. So you have a little over two weeks left.

Hillary delegates voted for by the people of Nevada.

They rioted when their bold attempt at subverting democracy was stopped dead in its tracks by the brave chairwoman and Senator Boxer.

Chairs flew and bros were screaming BITCH at the top of their lungs at them and rushed the stage.

The hotel had to call in security to protect them and shut down the riot.

Then the mob went over to the Democratic HQ and vandalized it.

Later death threats were called in to the poor woman and her grandkids even.

It really opened the eyes of many Bernie Democrats who want no part of rioting mob action.

Despite the fact that Bernie has always been a class candidate decrying or condemning violence in any form, unlike most other politicians Bernie even held his fire in attacking Hillary over her e-mails during a national debate.

This wasn't good enough for the corporate media conglomerates, along with Schultz and other establishment Democrats they wanted Bernie to wear sack cloth and ashes as well, condemn his supporters without acknowledging the unfairness and undemocratic/unDemocraticness of what transpired in Nevada and for that matter throughout much of this campaign.

They're just a bunch of noobs

Bilbray practiced law and was deputy district attorney of Clark County, Nevada, from 1965 to 1967. He was then chief legal counsel in the Clark County juvenile court from 1967 to 1968 and was an alternate municipal judge in Las Vegas from 1978 to 1980. He became licensed to practice law before the Nevada Gaming Commission and the Nevada Gaming Control Board in 1970. A Democrat, he ran for the United States House of Representatives in 1972 against conservative incumbent Walter Baring, a fellow Democrat who was disliked by his party's establishment. Bilbray won the primary and was expected to win the general election, but Baring surprised him by endorsing the Republican nominee, David Towell, who upset Bilbray in a close race. Bilbray made a comeback in 1980 when he was elected to the Nevada State Senate, where he served from 1981 to 1987, and also became chairman of the Taxation Committee and a member of the Judiciary Committee. He successfully ran for the U.S. House of Representatives in 1986 for the seat being vacated by Harry Reid, who made a successful run for the U.S. Senate in the same election. He served as chairman of the Small Business Subcommittee on Taxation, Tourism and Procurement and was also a member of the Foreign Affairs, Armed Services and Intelligence committees.

Did the Sanders delegates have the numerical superiority to win any vote... NO! So had there been a public vote at the convention "to give Lange 'exclusive control”, would it have passed? YES

Look most of the Sanders delegates to the Nevada convention were brand new to the process. They were both out numbered and out maneuvered by more experienced Clinton delegates. In keeping with the Sanders meme that the DNC is not being fair to his campaign, the Sanders delegates thought they were being cheated and pitched a fit.

By all accounts the Obama delegates pulled the same maneuver at the Nevada convention in 2008 and the Clinton delegates never complained. Why the difference in reaction to the exact same thing? In 2008 the Clinton delegates knew the rules; in 2014 the Sanders delegates did not.

There have been any number of news investigations into this sordid ruckus, but the rules haven't changed since 2008. The rules had been publicly available weeks in advance, and there were no last minute rule changes sprung on convention goers.

The rules, which can be read here, require a voice vote, and others that say only the convention chair can declare the winner, or call for any change in the method of voting. So contrary to what that ignorant woman says in her rant, or what any of you Sanders fans wish, the delegates don't get to to demand a separate round of voting.

Be brave, read the investigations. You have no basis for complaint, none whatsoever, because these are the rules, limitations and restrictions agreed to by the Sanders Campaign. If you are angry, then your displeasure should more appropriately be directed at Sanders, yeah?

http://www.politifact.com/nevada/statements/2016/may/18/jeff-weaver/allegations-fraud-and-misconduct-nevada-democratic/

Sanders campaign manager Jeff Weaver said Nevada Democratic Party leaders "hijacked the process on the floor" of the state convention "ignoring the regular procedure and ramming through what they wanted to do."

Caucuses and delegate math can be incredibly confusing, and the arcane party structures don’t reflect how most people assume presidential selection works.

But the howls of unfairness and corruption by the Sanders campaign during Nevada’s state Democratic Convention can’t change the simple fact that Clinton’s supporters simply turned out in larger numbers and helped her solidify her delegate lead in Nevada.

There’s no clear evidence the state party "hijacked" the process or ignored "regular procedure."

We rate this claim False.

Your like a guy whose team lost a game 41-14 and he's bitching about a call he claims the ref missed in the third quarter.

If you wanted to prevent something like this happening, you should have made sure all of those Sanders fans at his Nevada rallies actually showed up at the caucuses and voted.

It's just another in a long line of excuses, conspiracy theories, etc.

It easy, your guy lost and what happened in Nevada didn't make a tinkers damn in the final results for the nomination.

GET OVER IT!!!

Where Bernie goes the Corruption is Revealed! A Vast Trail of Corruption to be dealt with is what we will be able to work against if it comes down to Hillary or Trump.

The Investigations of the corrupt Voting Practices of States will be for the Future with "Bernie Movement that will NOT Die but be Revitalized with the information that Bernie's Campaign has Cataloged and Curated during his Run in 2016.

Lots for us Lefty Progressives to Reveal whether it's Trump or Hillary...or if Hillary goes down over "Private Server" and Bernie can manage to WIN based on those who voted for him and our Dems finally having to Wake Up!

She wasn't a delegate yet took part in a voice vote:

My son and I jumped to our feet as well, added our voices to the chorus. It felt good.

And I don't see any impropriety on the part of the chair in this account.

134. Allegations of fraud and misconduct at Nevada Democratic convention unfounded
Sat May 21, 2016, 05:27 AM
May 2016

Here is some fact checking on this issue http://www.politifact.com/nevada/statements/2016/may/18/jeff-weaver/allegations-fraud-and-misconduct-nevada-democratic/

Supporters of Sanders believed that the convention rules, which have been largely the same since 2008, gave an unfair amount of power to Lange, the convention chair. The rules specifically lay out that all convention votes must be done by voice vote, and that only the convention chair can declare the winner or call for a more specific method of voting among the thousands of delegates.

The rules, which can be read here, also state that any amendment attempts must be approved by two-thirds of the convention delegates — which would be difficult given the nearly even number of Clinton and Sanders backers present.

Sanders backers say the continuing nature of the presidential primary necessitated more rule changes.

The Sanders campaign did not respond to a request for comment. In a previous statement, the campaign detailed several allegations of misconduct from the state party, which we considered as part of this fact-check. "At that convention the Democratic leadership used its power to prevent a fair and transparent process from taking place," the campaign said in that statement.

However, there were no last minute rule changes sprung on convention-goers — the rules had been publicly available weeks in advance, largely unchanged for three presidential cycles, and given to both campaigns.

The first major fight happened in the morning, with the convention being gaveled in nearly 40 minutes after the scheduled 9 a.m. start time.

In a voice vote, Lange approved adoption of a preliminary credentials report showing more Clinton than Sanders delegates. Immediate howls of protests from the Sanders contingent emerged, many of whom rushed the dais and started screaming insults and obscenities directly at Lange.

Although several videos from the event appear to have louder "nays" than "yeas," both preliminary and final delegate counts showed that Clinton supporters outnumbered Sanders supporters in the room.

And trying to determine the outcome of a voice vote from a video of around 3,000 delegates is somewhat arbitrary to begin with. The only person with authority to call for a different voting mechanism is the convention chair: Lange.....

Our ruling

Welp, there goes the Weaver narrative. Basically what we're left with are unhappy campers who got their asses handed to them and then tried to blame the state party. Thanks for finding this!

Her father, James Bilbray, a Hillary supporter, was so disgusted by what transpired he tore up his ballot.

James Bilbray

~snip~

Bernie or bust. Why reward scum any longer. This primary should be a wake up call to all democrats. The party is against progressive ideas that shaped the party for decades. The party leadership are corporate puppets that hide behind rigged procedures and corrupt state party representatives.

A storm is brewing and is needed to wash these fools out of office.
