2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumthe next president of the us will be trump or clinton
thats simple reality.
so you have to ask yourself
who would be better.
theres no debate.. the answer is clinton.
so thats who you vote for.
refusing to vote for clinton helps trump. its that simple.
so unless you are somehow enamored by tht thought of trump stacking the supreme court you vote for clinton. and spend teh next 4 years remaking teh democratic party so a bernie sanders type CAN win in 2020.
but for 2016 you vote for clinton

(2,074 posts)The OP just stated the obvious. Trump will be the GOP nominee. Hillary will be the Dem nominee. Those will be the choices. You choose which one of the two will be better, and work towards strengthening the Democratic Party and progressive causes in other areas. It's really that simple.

(36,063 posts)SCOTUS can't be stacked by Trump, or for that matter by Clinton alone. He needs help from the Senate.
So the question is, how do we stop the Senate from helping Trump stack it's membership.
And THERE smack in the center of my view is a problem. To stop the SCOTUS stacking, Dems -MUST- control the confirmation process WITH SENATORS.
Now, I vote in a state where we have a good chance of flipping a senate seat in 2016.
BUT
To do that requires that I vote for a Divorced/remarried (to a freak'n ACADEMIC!!!), ethnic Jewish, white guy, who lives in a white suburb and voted to allow guns on trains, read and voted against the PATRIOT ACT and voted against authorization of force in Iraq (mmmm, just like candidate grumpy!) and a guy who -STARTED HIS OWN PROGRESSIVE MOVEMENT-back after 2010.
So, to save the Senate and SCOTUS and all the people who depend on that salvation, I'm supposed to support a senate nominee who is just the sort of progressive monster that I'm supposed to see as a threat to the Party and nation when they run for the Presidency.
Whut?
Now if Clinton -wins- the presidency, she'll deserve a Senate she can work with. When I consider that as a priority, I notice that the incumbent Mr Johnson is closer to Clinton on more of the big issues to us guys out in the countryside than Feingold.
Damn!

(9,385 posts)Gerald Ford didn't expect to be President, he was House Majority Leader when both President and Vice President ended up being driven out of office.
Some of the 24/7 fortune tellers around here need to give it a rest.
You don't know the future, you just think you do. It doesn't get here till it gets here.

(23,018 posts)She will still lose against Trump. She is energizing unity around Trump and she will lose independents by large margins. Her campaign and the DNC burned the fucking bridge with them.

(4,753 posts)1. Hillary is an interventionist; Trump is an isolationist
2. Hillary will put NAFTA/CAFTA Bill in charge of trade deals. Trump is against all of the neoliberal trade deals.
