2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumThe election was rigged.
I have a lot of repub employees who were strong Romney supporters back in '12.
The day after the elections every single one of them told me the election was "rigged".
I just smiled thinking "whatever delusion you need to get through the day is fine."
Many Bernie supporters (including one of my own sons) remind me of those Romney voters after the election.

(99,710 posts)The conservative activist who gained a following during last year's campaign for his efforts to "unskew" polls has a theory on why his predictions for the election were so wildly off the mark, writing late last month that his analysis was incomplete because he did not consider the purported voter fraud and voter suppression efforts that he claimed were integral to President Barack Obama's victory.
Dean Chambers, the founder of UnSkewedPolls.com, wrote in a piece on Examiner.com that the "Obama Regime definitely won the election" by suppressing votes from would-be supporters of Mitt Romney and committing "massive voter fraud in the key swing states" although he offered no evidence for either claim.
"I was only wrong in those projections because I was not aware nor did I calculate in the voter fraud and the voter suppression, both of which exceeded the margin by which Barack Obama was declared the winner of that election last Fall," Chambers wrote.
It wasn't the first time Chambers floated such a theory. Shortly after last year's election, he launched a new website BarackOFraudo.com in which he alleged that the President did not legitimately carry Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Florida. That website included a map (shown below) with the disputed states colored black.

The sad thing is everybody here thought he was a nut.

(99,710 posts)At first he admitted his unskewing had failed. It was only after the passage of some time he admitted Romney because of fraud.

(36,437 posts)understand that they sometimes lose elections. Maybe the other party had a better line of argument, or economic conditions favored their case. Maybe it was demographic or structural this year. Maybe the other candidate had advantages of incumbency or name recognition. A million reasons for losing elections. Adults also know that all elections have small, non-determinative irregularities and inconsistencies, because elections are structurally messy and difficult affairs to organize. We accept that gathering the opinions of a million people is bound to have some small errors, if we're adults.
The immediate reversion to conspiracy thinking, the refusal to accept election results, the exaggeration of small, non-determinative irregularities into massive conspiracies. These are all traits of fascism.

(375 posts)That's why I think Bush beat Kerry in 2004. But I never bought the conspiracy theories that Bush stole the election.

I didn't realize second graders were so eloquent these days.

(375 posts)But that doesn't mean that they were stolen.
Well 2000 was a special case. It was close, and there wasn't much confidence that the tally in Florida was accurate. There is a very plausible case that Gore should have been awarded that State. The Bushies sure were anxious to close down that line of inquiry.
In 2004 the voters just made the wrong choice. Sometimes you just have to accept that.
I'm old enough to remember 1980. Was that stolen? Do I think the results were just peachy? No to the first, and HELL NO to the second.
