Washington (CNN)Democrats knew a general election battle between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump would be rough, but many never considered the potential of a nailbiter.
During a primary in which Trump usurped the GOP establishment, alienated crucial sectors of the general electorate on issues like immigration and abortion and dinged his own approval ratings, many Democrats salivated at talk of a November duel with the billionaire.
Now, as Trump prepares for a general election showdown, veteran Democrats warn there is little room for complacency.
"It will be close," said Mark Alderman, a veteran Democratic Party fundraiser who worked on President Barack Obama's transition team.
"I think that Trump as the nominee is an advantage for our party, but not nearly the advantage that some people had thought and hoped it would be," said Alderman, now with Cozen O'Connor Public Strategies. "I think he has proven to be a far more formidable candidate than expected."

(67,108 posts)looking inward. Trump resonates well with many and he's a showman. He has identified and exploited the discontent by millions of voters in the US. They are fed up with everything. Meanwhile, Hillary represents the establishment, and then touts Bill as her economic adviser. The GE is going to be extremely rough IMO. I really question the strategic thinking of the DNC, etc. ... but apparently I'm supposed to shut up and say/think all is perfect.

(2,161 posts)It seems clear that the people that rig the voting machines are on Hillary's side, so I expect her to be declared the winner in November. She's the one who will keep the gravy train rolling for the MIC and the 1% as usual, so it makes sense that the Powers That Be will be tilting the scales in every way possible in her favor.

(34,845 posts)Of course anything is possible between now and then but Trump shoots himself regularly in the foot. If anyone insists on seeing Clinton as damaged goods, Trump is even more so. I don't think the election will be as close as some want it to be.
