2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumHillary is no spring chicken either.
This is in response to all the recent threads about Bernie's age where he has been called a "crusty old Jew" that was especially lovely); "a cranky old man "; and much much more.
Hillary will be 69 in October. IF she is elected President, she will be 70 at the end of her first year.
But even more important than age is health. Anyone who is an senior citizen like myself knows that once you hit 55, age means nothing!
It's all about your health. I know an 87 year old that can swim the full length of a pool under water back and forth without stopping, and 60 year olds that get pooped out walking around a store like Costco.
So let's talk about health.
Bernie:
The summary, from Dr. Brian Monahan, described Sanders as in "overall very good health," with no history of cardiovascular disease, normal blood pressure and vital signs, and no significant chronic condition.
Bernie's health probs -
Acid reflux that triggers laryngitis from time to time, and a couple of hernia repairs
Now let's talk about Hillary:
Concussion in December 2012 after fainting.
During the course of her concussion treatment, Clinton was also found to have a blood clot and was given medication to dissolve it. She remains on the medicine as a precaution, Bardack wrote.
The blood clot, which was in a vein in the space between the brain and the skull behind the right ear, led Clinton to spend a few days in New York-Presbyterian Hospital and take a month-long absence from the State Department for treatment.
She has a very common thyroid condition and seasonal allergies, and takes a blood thinner Coumadin as a precaution since her fall and the blood clot. There was no mention of Clintons height or weight.
Got it? You can call Bernie an old man all you want, but he is a very healthy, energetic 74 year old man.
Just don't be surprised when Bernie supporters bring up Hillary's age and her health problems inn response.

(12,704 posts)That said I don;t think its wrong to question the state of her health. Bernie jogging thru airports and playing hoops is a clear indication of his good health. Another indication is the number and length of speeches he give at his many rallies. Hillary is making the rounds but the level of exertion is completely different. THere is also the concerning comment by Huma in an email that Hillary kept complaining of exhaustion as SoS.
passiveporcupine
(8,175 posts)She's lost a lot of weight on this campaign, if my eyes are not deceiving me, but she is still too heavy. I am 66 and also too heavy (due to some mechanical failures beyond my control...bad back and bad knee, and chronic pain issues, that make it impossible to exercise). I know how hard extra weight is on a body when younger, and especially as you get older. Exercise is essential to keeping your musculature and weight in good health.
She really needs to get her weight under control, or she is going to be fighting for energy for the rest of her life. I know she has thyroid problems, but she also has the money to hire a special cook and body trainer to help her lose weight and get as fit as she can be at this point in her life. The more fit she is physically, the more fit she will be mentally, and emotionally.
I am also concerned with her weight, as a representative of our country, when weight problems are so endemic with our youth. We need a leader to inspire our young people (and older people) to be healthy and active (like Michelle)...and I just don't envisage her in this role, unless she can lose more weight and get into some kind of regular exercise routine, like yoga, biking, hiking, or whatever. I just don't see her trying to be physical at all.
snagglepuss
(12,704 posts)I say this from developing serious insomnia 9 years ago. Getting only 5.5 hrs of sleep, the food cravings get unbearable and although I've always battled weight,I have,up until the insomnia, always exercised. But the the level of exhaustion I experience now makes that impossible. As she complained constantly of exhaustion while SoS, she may be overeating simply to stay awake since her schedule must be fairly tiring.
I would have thought that she has a personal cook. It would be surprising if she didn't. I do agree with your remarks about being a healthy role model however I think being president has been for her a kind of monomania so all her energoes get directed there.

RazBerryBeret
(3,075 posts)The point is, if he's too old now at 74 and she will be 72 in 2020; does 2 years really make a difference? where is your cut off mark? Is it 72, 73 or 74? Too old is too old, just depends on where you draw the line.

(24,979 posts)One year death probability, 0.033997
(3.3% chance of dying per year, rising a bit every year = about 15-16% chance of death before Jan. 2021)
Life expectancy, 11.55 years.
Female, 68 - I'll give her the lower number:
One year death probability, 0.013261
(1.3% chance of dying per year, rising = about 6-7% chance in four years)
Life expectancy, 17.85.
In other words, they both look like good bets, at least based on averages tabulating everyone based on recent outcomes that lump the healthy in with the already sick.
Data from https://www.ssa.gov/oact/STATS/table4c6.html
In practice, health and life expectancy are entirely individual and should be judged only as such.
Now what the presidency does to people, you'd think will kill either - or Trump. Except presidents keep surviving it. Great care is taken for them by a lot of staff.
Now look at both of them in action. Just because I like one better than the other, it's hard to see either as anything other than robust, and not just for their ages.
Sanders shows phenomenal energy, an exception at any age. I've never heard he had any problems. The way the age card has been played against him, as compared to competitors who are almost as old, is atrocious.

But, she's not progressive, and has a narrow view of world leadership. She also is careless, as is evident with using methods outside protocol for high level international correspondence. She will also throw the nearest person in front of the bus for it.
Old, stuck in the past, poor leadership is no way to play president... Oh, she's smart enough for obtaining circular tight ringed support, after having access to it for years through her husband, who is also old, and not progressive.
But, it's no way to be a president.

(14,498 posts)If I got the gist... he ( poster) was saying that he'd ( Bernie) be PERCEIVED as "a crusty old jew" out in non Jewish America, should he be the nominee.
I believe he even put the word "jew" in quotes. Implying that that's not what HE would think; but that's what large swaths of non-Jewish America would think.
He actually had a point.
Besides we've seen real anti-semitism , I mean real *hate-the-Jews* stuff, posted here by someone who, though I think is currently absent, has NOT been permanently banned, and has even been lionized in "appreciation threads" ( good god) on the AA forum and elsewhere.
They "miss" her.
