Back!!! - I proudly stand with Representative Sam Farr in his endorsement of Hillary Clinton
Over the last several months, weve heard from the candidates running for president about their plans if they are elected.
What these candidates seems to forget is that while the Constitution gives the president the ability to propose legislation, only Congress has the authority to dispose legislation. Based on this separation of powers which our founding fathers intended, its essential for the president and Congress to work together.
Right now, the Central Coast and our nation need leaders who will build consensus.
With that mind, as voters along the Central Coast select a new U.S. representative, senator and president in the California primary, I urge them to really examine the experience and qualifications of each candidate instead of listening only to their rhetoric.
Leaders should be measured not by what they say but what they have accomplished. A leader who gets results was my campaign slogan each election year. I wanted your vote based on what I did in office, not what I said. Rhetoric is easy, results are hard.
In fact, I consistently beat my partys registration numbers each election, which means even those who were not registered as Democrats voted for me. I attribute that to getting results for my constituents. Almost the entire time Ive been in Congress, my party has been the minority in the House of Representatives so I had to work with Republicans to build consensus.
In particular, as I watch the presidential primaries unfold, I fear that many voters have fallen for campaign rhetoric without any explanation from candidates on how to work with Congress. Words are powerful. When mixed with fear they can harm, when mixed with hope they can inspire. But it still takes consensus builders to pass laws that help people and make change.
