2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumBoxer did not "flip the bird" or say she "feared for her life", Steinem never called women "sluts"
Obama did not endorse Bernie on Facebook. (Although it was funny to see people who proclaim to hate him wishing for it!)
Integrity left the building a while ago.

(47,209 posts)of mind- also liars. I imagine she was concerned about the safety of others there too. I think anyone watching that footage would have been. But I will admit that is what I imagine. Saying I know how she felt would obviously be lying.
Stop spreading bullshit.

She might very well have felt great fear.
haikugal
(6,476 posts)angry by the machinations at the NV primary. She has been doing everything possible to smear Bernie and his supporters in support of her relative, Hillary Clinton.
Gloria dismissed female Bernie supporters out of hand by stating the were there "for the boys"...totally despicable.
They are but two of many people who have been esteemed and found to be shams this election cycle.

I wouldn't say for sure it's the middle finger but I'd say it probably is.

(12,958 posts)It is Barbara Boxer flipping off the audience.
bettyellen
(47,209 posts)She does not have seven finger, or a severely asymmetrical hand. Nope.
vintx
(1,748 posts)and what does that gesture mean?
And is she from there?
bettyellen
(47,209 posts)SBS wags his fingers all day long. Also, has employed a bird, but not "the bird".
vintx
(1,748 posts)If you did you have to face some facts which you are clearly wishing were not so.
She was being hateful. The NV chair had just railroaded both Bernie AND Hillary supporters by subverting the Democratic process in order to avoid dealing with issues she didn't want to.. and Barbara here couldn't possibly have cared less
Enjoy the fallout

(5,240 posts)The picture is very grainy and I can see three humps which appears to make it look like her index.
But, if you clinch your hand together and flip someone off the thumb can poke above the third finger making a bump which would
give the impression that it was a third finger and not the thumb. Like George RR Martin in this picture.

bettyellen
(47,209 posts)finger the entire walk off the stage. Pretty understandable for someone who purported Dems were calling a "b*tch" and more just moments prior. She had every right to be pissed off.
Autumn
(44,982 posts)below her knuckle if she were wagging her index finger there would not be a nub. Nice try, however any one can wag their own finger in front of a mirror and they will clearly see she's flipping the bird. Anatomy. It fucking works.
bettyellen
(47,209 posts)Bernie wags his index finger all day long- but now it is a crime. HA.
Autumn
(44,982 posts)if it were finger wagging there would be nothing discernible there. In fact facing a person and watching a person wag their finger as you say she is doing and as the camera person did ,no individual knuckles would been seen. At best you would see a thumb stick out, again no individual knuckles, and you might see something like a backwards check mark where the fingers form the finger wag.
bettyellen
(47,209 posts)Which is, if you have not noticed, where the middle finger is located.
Autumn
(44,982 posts)that small little thing you see where the two knuckles are there is a little thing there. but whatever it is it is not a bent pinkey finger. Fingers don't work that way unless she has somehow deformed her fingers. Sorry but that's just how fingers work. You don't have to study someone else's hands, look at your own. Stand in front of a mirror and hold your hand and fingers like that, that's not a finger wag, then stand in from of a mirror and flip yourself the bird, and you will see what you see in that picture. Now you have a real good day, I'm bored with this discussion.

(6,896 posts)sad to say how much I have lately learned about sexism.
explains a lot though.
bettyellen
(47,209 posts)That is a whole other bag of judgmental garbage and not anything Steinem would ever actually say. I don't appreciate anyone pretending she of all people would "shut shame", yet a lot of people here just ignored that lie. It is disheartening to see.
Aerows
(39,961 posts)what she said. I made no value judgment whatsoever, just asked for you to read what it actually says.
There is no dispute that is exactly what she said. I can hunt up the video, but I'm pretty sure everyone has already seen it.
bettyellen
(47,209 posts)I think she was commenting on how much of a social/ social media movement the SBS thing has been. And to the extent that there has been a lot of social pressure that (all) younger voters are more vulnerable to I think there is a bit of truth to it. I could see that being said in slightly different ways about any candidate, and their social group though. And I am sure any of them would be insulted too! But people vote for personalities and as groups probably more than they do on the issues. Sad, but often true.
I think calling anything about what she said a "slut shame" is pretty twisted. When I was younger 90% of my friends were men, and not because I wanted to fuck them. That shit is insane. And deeply insulting to women.
Warren DeMontague
(80,708 posts)And not just Steinem- Madeleine Albright, DWS, etc have done it, too. (Not to mention a good number of posters here.)
If the Steinem comment had happened in a vacuum, I think it would be one thing, but it didn't.
It has been a kind almost reflexive and knee-jerk get off my lawnitude, and it's counterproductive- because for all the "they never vote" noise, insulting them is one way to ensure they don't.
bettyellen
(47,209 posts)and I agree with you. Although I don't think anyone is to blame for not voting except for the voters. You want to change the narrative, it requires continued participation. And I do hope they are up for it. Bonus points for lawnitude.
Warren DeMontague
(80,708 posts)And for me at this point the only relevant question is how do we get to a place of more unity.
Like, Boxer was my Senator for many years. I believe I phone banked for her in '98, IIRC, but it's hazy. But I was always a fan and a supporter. (DiFi, not so much) ... whether she flipped the bird or not is immaterial to me, personally. And whatever went down in NV, and like I said I think there has been hyperbole around it from all sides- one takeaway I would think we all could get out of this deal is, what the fuck are we doing in 2016 with these crazy and arcane caucus procedures?
The system needs an overhaul, and I'm not talking "oh we must open all our primaries to independents", I mean we are long overdue to do away with caucuses and maybe in the process update the order in which states vote, to give different parts of the country a chance to weigh in earlier every 4 years.
Just my opinion.
Aerows
(39,961 posts)what Jane, Dick and Spot said rather than exactly what Steinem said.
Her comment was not said in a slightly different way about any candidate nor their social groups.
That is what she said and who she said it about.
That is what the two posts I made said.
I'm not sure how you are going to manage to cast what she said in a positive light, but it's not working so far. We've covered the exact wording, who the message was aimed at, what Jane, Dick and Spot thought about it, but so far, last I checked, that was still what she said and who she said it to.
bettyellen
(47,209 posts)that claimed Steinem was somehow being a slut shamer. I think that was total bullshit. I also think the people saying it do not believe it for a minute, they just want to trash Steinem out of anger.

(154,021 posts)Since there is an issue with narratives falling appart due to my goodness, photos and videos...it is not 2006 after all. Ban them from all party events. That way you will not have inconvenient stuff emerge in the inter tubes that contradicts the narrative.
After that 47 percent comment some of that was absorbed. But you all need to ban that new fangled technology and wish the peasants don't revolt.

(154,021 posts)Party convention where they perceived their rights were trampled! In normal countries we call that politics. Props to you, for giving up on the other half of the now fallen apart narrative. No chairs flew
That was some hot politics. That includes a United States Senator yes, flipping the bird. My goodness. You all act as if any of this is well unprecedented. My goodness, do avoid planning board, school board and city hall meetings. They actually can get hotter than the Nevada Stare Convention
bettyellen
(47,209 posts)You want to keep lying about "the bird" go right ahead. At least "fuck you" is not sexist garbage.
Why do you assume you are the only one going to city hall meetings for fucks sake? The rest of us have no need to brag about it on fake news sites - we just go and do our parts in democracy when we can because we care- not because we want to "report" it on our blogs and pretend it is a "job". Get over your self proclaimed "authority", you post partisan bullshit along with dozens of other self important people on the net.

(154,021 posts)you are confusing heat of the moment, and hot politics, with whatever. This is far from unprecedented. It happens, it is called politics. It will continue to get get hotter. Do avoid City Hall in the flesh, I mean it. We have seen flexi cuffs, and pepper spray produced and people cited. None was even cited here.
But you keep it up, I just love it.
As to the rest of your insults you pretend to be above the fucking fray, (there I did use a bad word so fucking what) but you are not. You are a partisan, and you care not about democracy, just winning a hockey game, err election. You treat it to that level.
