2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumHow will you be celebrating election night?
I had planned since the days after the first debate, to take that Wednesday off, believing that the election call would probably go late into the night, or worse case scenario, we wouldn't know for a day or more. Regardless, I had planned to either be 'drunk' with dispair, or drunk with jubilation. FTR, I hardly ever drink; special occasions only, and never get drunk, but I knew that this election I would have to make an exception.
Now I'm feeling good, looking FORWARD. I expect we will know the results rather early FORWARD, and now I'm thinking about celebrating with people rather than home alone.
What are your election night plans? FORWARD

(304 posts)And drink some wine.
I expect Obama to win, but I am also expecting some shit to go down. So I'm making sure I'm prepared for both. All I know is, my state of Ohio better turn blue.
And I already voted early on Monday, so that's out of the way.

She's been invited to many Democratic parties. We're thinking of hitting at least three of them, starting with the Carter event at a local restaurant and bar.

(18,402 posts)I have the opportunity to get tickets to the McCormick Place post-election speech thing here in Chicago, since I'm signed up for four shifts of GOTV. But I'm actually not sure I want to go. But then, I wasn't sure I wanted to go to Grant Park in 2008, even though I had tickets. I was glad I did in the end, not because I got to see Obama in person (we were off to the side in the park, and ended up watching on a screen). It was because of the historic nature and being among all the other amazed and happy people. Also because it was a freaky, beautiful 70 degrees here in November.
This time, it's indoors; it will be more "insiders" (people who've worked on the campaign); and not as historic. Just a giant relief. Plus, I'm sure we'll have to watch on a screen again. So why not stay home and watch on TV? I just don't know. I may try to get the tickets and then see how the mood strikes me at the moment.
So, three as yet decided options:
(1) Stay home in my PJs and watch the returns on TV.
(2) Invite our friends over for dinner and watching on TV, but without the pajamas.
(3) Hop on the train and smash myself into a back corner of McCormick Place convention hall.
I just hope we WIN WIN WIN!

(2,336 posts)My brother, an old union organizer/leader, who had been for Hillary (old school guy raised in the South, didn't think a black man could win the South). He had sat up a table in front of his polling place to help Obama in any way he could. After the polls closed he went to get a dozen oysters and have a beer to wait for the states to start reporting in. He called me on his cell phone, amazed that an old union guy sat at a table all day with a wonderful lesbian woman, and had great fun with her, as she kept getting emails signed Barack, Axelrod, Plouff, and all those. You remember. My brother, was stunned at the ground game and her emails all day. A new world to the old guy. He was calling, to see if there was any news yet. I cried out "They called Pennsylvania!" Then "We got Ohio!" We both burst into tears, sobbing with joy. He said, "It's over! That's it." I will never forget that night. I am looking forward to Tuesday with hope and joy, and to 4 years of accomplishments.

(7,637 posts)Go to local Democratic party, celebrate about the national winners, cry about some brave and worthy Texas candidates going down to defeat. Drink wine.
Or, stay home, drink wine, go to bed and turn on radio early Wed. AM.
Haven't decided yet.
National television may not have much about the Texas races, so might learn more at the Dem. party.

(10,437 posts)Hopefully I won't be distracted enough to lose too many points. I'll just stay there after the usual 9:00pm exit; might be a push to stay until it gets called but I want to see one of the big 3 at least.
