Seriously, who really thought a debate proposed as an off-the-cuff remark on a late-night talk show was actually going to happen?

(660 posts)Like the owner of a dog, Trump held up a dog treat to see if Sanders would respond. Predictably, Sanders began hopping up and down begging for the treat.
What do you suppose Trump will do now? He'll put the treat back in his pocket and laugh at Sanders.
Trump is really disgusting.
Nailed it.

(18,624 posts)I'm not sure it was so well thought out on Trump's part, but that seems to be the net result.
Bernie's debating days are over. No one besides a loud but small collective of supporters take him seriously anymore. Good thing they're only out $27.86.

(13,964 posts)Trump would go through with it. He just let Trump know that he would debate if he was serious. I wouldn't have minded it, as long as they didn't team up against Hillary. Bernie could make Trump look like the fool he is and then Hillary can finish of the talking yam in the fall debates.

(2,280 posts)I've seen enough of Bernie to know that he's out for himself. What he said about Nevada is plenty evidence of that, but before that too. Debating Trump would be doing a favor to Trump. Yeah, Bernie might benefit too, but not as much as Trump.

it would be lose/lose for Bernie all around.

(3,089 posts)What better venue could they have then to have both Trump and Bernie going after Hillary? And the difference between Bernie and Trump on the issues is small: Reign in Wall Street, break up the banks, kill all trade, against foreign workers, Hillary is corrupt and should not be President. They are together on all these issues.
Turin_C3PO
(13,964 posts)That's not at all a fair characterization of Bernie. Yes, they're similar on those issues (oh, Bernie does NOT want to kill trade, he believes in free and FAIR trade). And that's because Trump is more centrist on those few issues. Sanders supports civil rights for all groups, is pro-choice, believes in much stronger safety nets, a more generous Social Security. They are not remotely similar. Neither are Hillary and Trump.

(18,624 posts)Trump wasn't making a joke he just said something he's unable to follow up on. Again.
I disagree that Trump is "more afraid of Sanders" than Hillary though. The campaign nixed Trump's stupid challenge because there's no upside to it. He's too likely to say something to show his ignorance.
I doubt the campaign is anxious to see Trump, a rank amateur, debate any seasoned politician one on one. Either Clinton or Sanders would rip him to shreds on substance.
