(2,023 posts)I can't follow the OP....I had to check back and forth a few times, but the AHF would be the AIDS Healthcare Foundation, as far as I can decipher. I fail to see who Mr. Staley is with? National Nurses United? Ryan White's program? The whole thing seems strange and very vague.

(2,054 posts)National Nurses United Endorses Senator Bernie Sanders for President
Caring, compassion, and community. These are the values at the heart of registered nursing. This is true at the bedside, as nurses advocate for patients and familiesand also beyond the walls of the hospital, as RNs call for environmental, racial, and economic justice in the name of public health. National Nurses United, which represents some 190,000 nurses nationwide, seeks to uphold that positive vision for the health of this country by endorsing Senator Bernie Sanders for president.
Here are 10 reasons why National Nurses United endorses Bernie Sanders:
1. REVERSE INCOME INEQUALITY, JOBS TO REBUILD AMERICA
Bernie Sanders will invest $1 trillion to rebuild our crumbling infrastructure roads, bridges, dams, water systems, schools to create 13 million goodpaying jobs. Bernie sponsored legislation to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour, and calls for pay equity for women.
2. GUARANTEE HEALTHCARE FOR ALL, CUT RX PRICES
Too many Americans remain priced out of access to healthcare. Bernie Sanders calls for guaranteed care for everyone with an improved, expanded Medicare for all. He also sponsored legislation to slash the high cost of prescription drugs.
3. HOLD WALL STREET ACCOUNTABLE
Bernie Sanders demands Wall Street pay its fair share of taxes and introduced the nurses-backed S. 1371, a small tax on stock market speculation to raise hundreds of billions of dollars to heal America.
4. MAKE COLLEGE TUITION AND DEBT FREE
Bernie Sanders introduced a bill to make all public colleges and universities tuition free, paid for by a tax on Wall Street speculation. He proposes slashing student loan interest rates.
5. REAL ACTION ON CLIMATE CHANGE
To attack the climate crisis, Bernie Sanders comprehensive plan includes taxing fossil fuels and transitioning to renewable energy, ending fossil fuel subsidies, stopping dangerous Arctic oil drilling, and protecting the health of our children harmed by fossil fuel pollutants.
6. A FAIR AND HUMANE IMMIGRATION POLICY
Bernie Sanders supports full immigration reform, including a path to citizenship for 11 million undocumented immigrants. He would dismantle inhumane deportation programs, ban for-profit detention centers, and expand DACA and administrative relief for parents of legal permanent residents.
7. END SYSTEMIC RACISM
Bernie Sanders calls for sweeping criminal justice reforms, including demilitarizing police forces; holding everyone, including police officers, accountable for violating the law; banning for-profit prisons; reducing mass incarceration; and turning back from the failed war on drugs.
8. CARE FOR OUR VETERANS
Bernie Sanders sponsored bipartisan legislation to expand VA medical facilities and hire more VA doctors and nurses, and pledges to ensure all veterans get the full care they need, including expanded mental health and dental services.
9. EXPAND SOCIAL SECURITY
Bernie Sanders has changed the national debate on Social Security by not only opposing cuts to this lifeline for seniors but also proposing expanded Social Security benefits, paid for by raising the payroll income gap which limits contributions to Social Security by the wealthiest Americans.
10. MONEY OUT OF POLITICS
Bernie Sanders has set a new standard for politics by renouncing funding from billionaires and corporate donors and their Super PACs. He calls for action to overturn the Citizens United court ruling that opened the door to the corruption of our electoral system by wealthy donors.

Concerns about the California Drug Price Relief Act (Initiative 15-0009)
These talking points were prepared by Project Inform, a leading AIDS advocacy group based in San Francisco.
It is unclear whether the initiative would result in cost savings to the state:
All of Medi-Cal managed care is carved out of the initiative, which is where the overwhelming majority of drug purchasing in Medi-Cal occurs.

Mark Meyer What a mess of an initiative. So little thought given to the possible consequences but I would bet it passes due to the frustration of high drug costs.

Wow, thanks John Weir! John has prepared a great primer (with plenty of links!) on the CA drug price initiative that Sanders endorsed, at odds with the wishes of most of the state's major AIDS organizations.

Feeling used and abused by the Sanders campaign right now. They just issued a press release making it sound like our meeting was about his endorsement of AHF's drug pricing ballot initiative in CA. Senator Sanders never brought the issue up during our meeting. WE brought it up near the end, only to tell him that we had been flooded with messages from all the leading AIDS organizations in CA with deep concerns about AHF's initiative -- they are worried it could actually negatively impact access to AIDS drugs. Those groups have tried to reach the campaign with these concerns but had hit a brick wall. We asked Sanders to designate someone in his campaign to talk with these groups, and he agreed to this. WE DID NOT ENDORSE AHF'S INITIATIVE. His campaign should not have issued a press release implying this was a major topic of discussion at the meeting, and that there was general agreement on the Senator's position on this. Anything but.

(25,429 posts)"U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders on Wednesday met with national HIV/AIDS advocates to discuss the epidemic and his support for a California ballot initiative to lower prices for taxpayer-supported AIDS treatments."
The Sanders press release says that the meeting was to discuss HIV/AIDS and his support of the ballot initiative.
Staley says that Sanders never brought up the initiative in the meeting, it wasn't a primary topic, and it wasn't discussed at all until the end of the meeting when Staley brought it up to note that they'd been inundated with messages noting deep concerns with the initiative. Deep concerns with the initiative that Sanders supports.
Hence, his objection to the way it was framed in the press release.

(5,815 posts)So, when I first moved from the Midwest to Berkeley, I thought the liberals here were a little dotty. Liberalism wasn't so much their politics as their civic religion. They never really understood policy. They just understood mouthing the liberal prayers, adopting liberal accoutrements, and generally virtue signalling at each other to death over how liberal they were. (Except for actual city policies which have slowly crushed the poor).
Anyway, I was walking down the street with my ex's mom and her friend as they discussed an Obama rally/appearance (This mustive' been 2010). And my ex's mom had gone and taken photos and things. But then, her friend, with the utmost reverence you'd reserve for maybe the pope tentatively asked.
"Did . . . did you touch him?"
I don't know why, but I laugh my ass off to this day every time I think of it. She said it in the same way you'd ask if she'd touched the hem of Jesus' robe. The reverence was perfectly wonderful.

(5,815 posts)But I did do a bit of research.
So here's the general description of the ballot initiative:
https://ballotpedia.org/California_Drug_Price_Relief_Initiative_%282016%29
The thought, and the reason the AIDS Healthcare Foundation supports it, is that it would introduce price controls on prescription drugs.
What I couldn't figure was Staley's objection to it. And I respect the man. He's been fighting from way back. He was involved in ACT UP. So, if he has a problem, I want to hear him out.
So I scoured around and found a really good round up by John Weir:
https://www.facebook.com/john.weir.7796420/posts/10154884037947519
So, in a nutshell: Bernie fucked up. He thought he was supporting something good (controlled costs of HIV/AIDS medication), but his campaign didn't understand the politics and problems around the initiative. Basically, no one did their research.
It's kind of a classic case of the condescending liberal. "Oh oh, controlling AIDS/HIV drugs is good!" Yeah, but read the fine print and listen to the community maybe.
He and/or his aides didn't.
