He knows that Sanders is desperate and decided to have fun with him.

Trump was interested because of the possibility that Sanders would sling hash at Clinton and Trump would surely use those opportunities to pile on and attack Hillary. A 2 against 1 dynamic.

But what if Bernie didn't criticize Hillary, and he focused entirely on debating Trump?

Bernie could win the debate and make Trump look like an idiot.

And even if Trump won the debate, he would have beaten a man who will not be in the GE. What's the value in that?
