2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumBernie had the most advantages in the primary, and still lost.
He had the advantage of undemocratic caucuses, which favored his smaller-but-more-enthusiastic constituency.
He had the advantage of the GOP going after Hillary while leaving him alone or in some cases even helping him.
He had the advantage of decades of scandal-mongering by Hillary's GOP opponents. The GOP created multiple Benghazi investigations for the sole purpose of attacking her poll numbers. Imagine if the entire GOP devoted government resources to destroying Bernie.
He had the advantage of the media wanting to make it a horserace, and obsessing about every little Clinton "scandal" or misstep.
And probably the biggest advantage of all: he never had to worry about running in a general election, because he's been out of it since March. Hillary had to worry about not alienating Bernie supporters, because she needs them in the GE. Bernie doesn't care who he alienates because he knows he won't be running in the GE.
Bernie can afford to propose things that he can't possibly pay for and don't add up because he knows they will never get any real scrutiny like they would in a general. Hillary knows that what she says and campaigns on in the primary will have to hold up for a general as well.
Basically, Hillary has defeated Bernie with just one hand, using the other hand to fight off the GOP. Bernie used both hands, and still lost by a big margin.

(8,361 posts)to Bernie - being completely IGNORED by the media for the first 8 months or so of his campaign. That helped him tremendously. He was also helped a great deal by the "hidden" debates. It was of tremendous benefit to him to keep most of the country from knowing who he was as long as possible.

(2,096 posts)indescribably absurd posts lately that it's like watching Comedy Central.

(4,835 posts)To me, it's interesting to see the analysis of why that is. There seems to be so many Bernie supporters (particularly here at DU), but it's pretty much done, it's over. It's been over for a while.
A lot of people obviously like him, show up to cheer his speeches, and sing his praises, but there are a lot of us who (while we would have voted for him had he gotten the nomination) grow weary of the distraction.
He embarrassed himself with his trip to the Vatican, his wife bankrupted that little college back home. He's human, he's not as pure as the driven snow.
He tried, he lost, it's over. There's nothing particularly amusing about detailing the advantages that he had, and nothing especially impressive about using the emoticon when you don't have anything interesting to say.
Move on.

(45,319 posts)inherently undemocratic? I mean, Nevada only started theirs in 2008 with Harry Reid as a major proponent of the caucus. Hillary has won all the contested Nevada Democratic caucuses in history. Was that also undemocratic? When Bernie supporters thought so, your team claimed to be very, very loyal to the Party and unwilling to question it. Washington, your team wanted to call the Primary the legitimate result, bashed that caucus. Washington also has a caucus because the Democratic Party insisted upon it and litigated against the State for the right to hold one. You are extremely critical of the Party, far more so than Bernie supporters. The double standard is glaring.
Bernie was a virtual unknown and his rival the most famous woman in the country, a bastion of Party politics married to an ex- President. All advantage was Hillary's, all of it and then some. In spite of this, she's still running for delegates against the no longer unknown Bernie Sanders.
Politics, it's full of surprises.

(2,280 posts)And yeah, the Nevada caucus, like all other caucuses, was undemocratic. If it was up to me there would be a primary there instead.

(20,591 posts)By not allowing millions of independents to cast their vote in any primary, Democratic or Republican, we really don't know who they would vote for. My guess is that those who lean left were more likely to support Sanders.
Bernie did well in caucus states. HRC did best in states she has no hope of winning in the GE.
And there's the name recognition thing.
Meanwhile you support the only candidate who has ever been under investigation by the FBI.
