Poll: Clinton narrowly leads Trump in New Jersey

A week before voters in New Jersey head to the polls for their parties' respective primaries, Hillary Clinton is clinging to a single-digit lead over likely general election opponent Donald Trump, according to results of a Monmouth University poll released Tuesday.

Matched against each other, Clinton earned 38 percent to Trump's 34 percent, while 11 percent volunteered that they would vote for another candidate, 15 percent said they are undecided and 2 percent refused to answer. Clinton earned the support of 72 percent of Democrats, while among Trump supporters, 73 percent of Republicans said they would vote for the party's presumptive nominee. Trump outperformed Clinton among independent voters, 37 percent to 25 percent, while 21 percent said they are undecided.

8. It's not Bernie - and I think it is just an outlier

Hillary hit Obama far more often in 2008 than Bernie did in 2016. This suggests that she is a pretty weak candidate. That she did not run the tables as Gore did against the more mainstream Bradley suggests there was a large group wanting an alternative.

Here, she likely will pick up more than the under 80% of the Democrats just as Trump will pick up more of the Republicans. The scary number is that he is winning the independents.

11. Bernie's campaign will go down as one of the most negative, anger stoked D party campaigns ever.

And that effect is not helpful to the cause.

In the end what gets people to the polls is hope. Not anger and not spreading confusion over math, confusion about the real enemy.

12. Hillary's campaign started the negativity

from the minute he announced -- attacking that he announced in Burlington , his home town and the town he was mayor of because - it was said - it was too white. Note that he did not go after Clinton's email or any of the potential conflicts of interest with the Clinton Foundation or that she violated the agreement to avoid conflicts of interest made with Obama.

It is nowhere near as angry as 1968 or Hillary's 2008 campaign.

Lots of polls showed it a single-digit state in 2012, Obama won by 18.
