2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumIf you can't stand any Dem besides Bernie, then you're the one who's a "fake Democrat."
It's not logical that like 95% of Democrats are "fake" and only the handful that Berners haven't dismissed as corporate establishment stooges are the "real" ones.

(45,251 posts)Remember, Nixon's health care plan did not have an individual mandate, only and employer mandate.
Remember, before war hero and NATO commander and Ivy League College President Eisenhower ran, the nation had experience a gobsmacking 20 consecutive years of Democrats in the Oval Office and a bunch of Democratic-controlled Congresses. Eisenhower and Nixon were probably walking a tightrope, trying to make sure they seemed at least somewhat left. Plus, Nixon came in in 1968, after a stunning Democratic victory in 1964.
I don't think Ike or Nixon were liberals. I think they believed they had to appear that way.

(1,166 posts)government continuing to sell out the people of this country in the name of personal power and personal enrichment. I'm surprised that as many people who absolutely approve of this kind of government, do. The warning signs of a dying empire are everywhere.

(241 posts)run ANY other democrat and I'll vote for them. Hillary is the worst choice the DNC could have made. She has made many enemies over the years. Any gay person in their right mind would never vote for her.

How long before Bernie officially joins the Trump campaign? May 26
She's got plenty of progressives, for example me. May 24
A majority of Bernie supporters just want a man to lead the country. May 23
Dear DNC: just let #babybernie have his pacifier. May 20
So now there's a video of a Bernie rioter threatening to throw a chair. May 18
Bernie supporters started throwing chairs in Nevada because they weren't allowed to cheat.

Most elected Democrats would not have helped to legitimize a right-wing military coup in Honduras which threw out the elected President, which is exactly what Hillary did as Secretary of State-- at the behest of some right-wing Republican senators.

They all should be shunned.
Some recognize the enemy. Some are ignorant of the enemy. Some are the enemy disguised as friends.

(5,272 posts)want it to stand for? Yes, technically we're all democrats, those of us who have been D's or have become D's and support Bernie, and those of us who are D's and support Clinton, etc. etc. It makes no sense saying one person is a democrat or another person isn't a democrat, but both sides are doing it. Hey! In fact, you're doing it here.
The problem is that the only thing that Democrats can agree that "Democrat" means, is our voter status that either allows or disallows us to vote for democrats in the primary. So, who cares who's a democrat and who's not? The title is more and more meaningless the more our candidates drift to the right on policy. We can't define it by principle, by even general principle any more.
This is what i've learned from Democrats on this site:
Socialism bad
Free trade is good
Nafta is good
the big banks can't be broken up
Fracking ...eh.
Wall Street: Job Creators
minimum wage hike: job killing
Guns BAD BAD BAD, (because? Wedge issues, GOOD GOOD GOOD)
Decriminalizing drugs ... eh
whistleblowing: traitorous
War ... eh
Campaign Finance, cozy relationships with big money, lobbying, "You have to fight fire with fire!" incidently that's a pretty great metaphor, because well, fire doesn't really fight fire...I guess you can burn up all the combustibles and oxygen before the other guy does)
Israel good, Palestine bad
Experience is key!
judgement: "well how are you going to make an omelette without breaking some eggs?"
Big dreams? Big change? "Not on my watch!"
But of course all this is in the name of pragmatism and incrementalism.
The point is, who are we? I think we can all agree that we are pro-choice, but then lets tarry softly on that one until we see exactly where on the spectrum of pro-choice Hillary lands after trying to court conservatives in the GE. You know, so that people have time to "reflect" on their opinions on the matter until it comes to them in an epiphany.
I think we can say we want an equal society where gay marriage is legal(some of you may be a little later to this party than others), and people aren't discriminated against, preyed upon or even targeted for the color of their skin, nor are they forced to battle uphill on an uneven playing field. Sadly, we can't agree that economic injustice is a major factor in this.
I think we all agree that we want everybody to be covered for medial insurance, we just don't all agree about whether or not people should be able to afford their coverage.
I think we all agree we want an educated populace(I'm going out on a limb here). We just don't all agree that we want to pay for it.
Anyway, it would be nice, if we were going to have an argument about who is or isn't a democrat, if we put some effort into defining what a democrat is. What are the common denominators? How far do we have to boil down?
