2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumIf, and that is a big if, HRC should be replaced by
another democrat, then why not Kerry?
I read a lot about Biden, and now O'Malley,
but neither one has been nominated before.
Kerry, I fear , is not very well liked by the
Clinton clan, but he has proven himself as
an absolut superior SoS with success in
many areas. He is trusted by Obama, and
knows the country just as well as anyone.

(3,431 posts)in case of a very serious effect of the FBI investigation.
My main question is : why then Biden or O'Malley,
when Kerry has more than the necessary
credentials.
guillaumeb
(42,641 posts)actually campaigned. What makes anyone think that any of the three would do as well as the two current candidates?
As to the ongoing FBI investigation, if anything happens it does not appear that it will happen soon.

My question was only raised with respect to
Biden or O'Malley as the other establishment
choice.

(3,473 posts)at least according to filings. And now, Secretary Clinton is still bringing in the money ... BS, not so much.

(325 posts)It'll be madness no matter who it is. I think the best bet really is Bernie, personally. Anyone else would make the system look ridiculously broken.

(20,317 posts)And he hasn't run in this one.
I don't see why Hillary or any of her friends should be allowed to substitute another candidate in her place, should she withdraw. There are two people running for this spot. If one drops out, it goes to the other.
sadoldgirl
(3,431 posts)in case something goes wrong?
I don't believe that HRC would give up the
place in spite of an indictment, but if so
why not a very successful SoS?
Yes, to your question about his former run;
however, remember Nixon?
grasswire
(50,130 posts)I don't remember what it was, though.
Although there are plenty of questions about Hillary's health, too.
karynnj
(59,333 posts)His wife's health is possibly what you have heard of. Kerry DID seriously break his leg in a bicycle accident, but he was back to heavy travel in a month.
I do not think either the Sanders people or Clinton people would be happy with him. Sanders did praise his work as secretary. Not to mention, he is still very busy as Secretary.
The Clintons never liked him, probably do not forgive him for endorsing Obama and likely blame him for not stonewalling on the email to protect her.

(21,328 posts)Her delegates would then be trusted to choose on behalf of her voters.
Under your logic if there was a candidate with 85% of the vote and some gadfly with only 15% and the one with 85% died they would have to nominate the one with 15%. That makes no sense.
Marr
(20,317 posts)He does not. It's a close contest.
If Hillary a corrupt politician drops out of a race because they've been caught in some criminal act, it's absurd to expect their little political faction to be allowed to just insert a replacement.

(45,851 posts)The best way I can think of to get Sanders supporters to give up on the election and stay home would be to parachute Biden into the nomination, nothing would more clearly and obviously make Bernie's point about the corruption of the establishment.
So I suspect it's a done deal...

No, thanks.
bjo59
(1,166 posts)primaries would be shoved ahead of the only candidate who promises to work overtime to reverse the corporate takeover of our government and the candidate who has been awarded 46% of the pledged delegates thus far in the primary season. If the party powers can just pick anyone they want to run for president in a general election, why hold primaries at all? In fact, why hold national general elections at all? Why not let the corporations who already write our laws simply choose who they'd like to live in the White House? (I'm sure it'll come to that eventually anyway.) That kind of "democracy" would be so much better for the "little people" who could then be left to post their selfies and pictures of kittens on Facebook in peace.

(80,708 posts)I like Kerry, but I don't think they would turn to him if Biden is available.
I have a few issues with Biden, not the least of which is his track record as enthusiastic proponent of the drug war.
Fumesucker
(45,851 posts)I'm having trouble thinking of anything that would more perfectly make Bernie's point regarding the corruption of the establishment than parachuting Biden (or anyone else) into the nomination.
Which is why I think it's damn near certain to happen.
Warren DeMontague
(80,708 posts)But, yeah.
Fumesucker
(45,851 posts)Parachuting another candidate into the nomination will clinch it for me.
Warren DeMontague
(80,708 posts)For both parties.
I don't think there is any great plan- Hillary was the one who had the big plan, and got the decks cleared and all the party apparatus lined up--- but if it turns out she's a damaged candidate, then everyone is left standing around not knowing their lines or even what the name of the play is.
How they would explain bringing Biden in to the millions of people who have voted for Sanders is just beyond me. But I do suspect such a scenario would involve something like that.
Very weird times.
Fumesucker
(45,851 posts)Hillary *has* to stay in until the convention else Sanders is something close to the default nominee, since that is unthinkable then a lot of behavior becomes more explicable. Remember HRCs lawyer pointed out she is not legally obligated to answer questions, that sounds like a way of stalling the investigation.
Parachute in a loser, blame the Berniebros for the loss, hunker down through four years of Trump and you're golden is what's going through some minds.
marions ghost
(19,841 posts)that some Hillary backers would rather see Trump than Bernie.
They wouldn't admit it so it's hard to quantify.
But I think it's a likely possibility.
