2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumWhy don't either Sanders or Clinton have the simplest most honest
component of a strategy to combat climate change in their proposals?
The 3Rs:
REDUCE
REUSE
RECYCLE
the step which can be done immediately without any dependency on changes in law, political environment, or technology is REDUCE
Everyone who cares about climate change should take immediate steps to reduce the amount of energy they use.
its summer or nearly summer for most of the country.
Either don't use or minimally use air conditioning...raise that thermostat.
At home, close off unused rooms and prevent air conditioning from cooling that unused space.
Don't use an air conditioner in your vehicle when you can use an open window instead
Make every trip in your car serve multiple purposes...
If you can reuse something, reuse it or recycle it.

Generate enough renewable energy to power every home in America, with half a billion solar panels installed by the end of Hillarys first term.
Cut energy waste in American homes, schools, hospitals and offices by a third and make American manufacturing the cleanest and most efficient in the world.
Reduce American oil consumption by a third through cleaner fuels and more efficient cars, boilers, ships and trucks.

(11,330 posts)and I'm pretty certain that individual states which enjoy fracking revenues have little interest in stopping fracking
Now Congress could make a law which may or may not be upheld by the SC.
Though I think I saw a recent federal court decision which undermines the clear air act

(26,877 posts)Would President Clinton veto it?
she wouldn't
but sadly, there won't be any drive in Congress to do so...until there is reasonable energy replacements
now if everyone would cut their energy use by 1/3....we wouldn't need fracking

(34,845 posts)It's less harmful to the atmosphere, for instance. I'm against it and I think Clinton, now that she's headed for the White House, will re-think her tepid endorsement of it.

(11,330 posts)a-fracking we will go
which is why we need to be serious about reducing our usage in our homes, cars, offices,....

(34,845 posts)I think Clinton was trying to go down the middle on the issue, get Republicans on board to do something. Her clean energy initiatives don't mention fracking so I'm betting she's already rethought this one.

(11,330 posts)asking supporters to better manage their own energy usage could happen instantly
its a revolution with guaranteed immediate benefit
just 5 degrees warmer reduces energy used for air conditioning by more than 10%
all of the others take time and money and to some degree good fortune. in order to cut oil consumption by a third...we'd need to replace 1/3 of the existing cars/boilers/ships/trucks....with new ones which use zero energy which isn't feasible in the next decade.
