2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumI thought Senator Sanders' statement on the rally violence was
very strong and very good tonight when he was asked about it. I'm sorry I don't have a transcript or link, but it was obviously quite heartfelt and appropriate.
Before some of you go there, yes, we need Hillary and every Democratic voice available to do the same. This violence must be disavowed by ALL of us. It must not be allowed to continue unanswered and unchallenged.
So anyway - Good job Senator Sanders. Well done.

(15,805 posts)"Violence is absolutely and totally unacceptable," said Sanders, after a press conference on the jobs market with former Secretary of Labor Robert Reich. "If people are thinking about violence, please do not tell anybody you are a Bernie Sanders supporter, because those are not the supporters that I want."

"Please don't tell anybody you support me because I don't want you?" That seems reasonable.
At one of the previous rallies in CA that went violent, a young woman who was interviewed identified herself and her family to MSNBC cameras live as Bernie supporters. She was actually on her way to pick up her mom from work when she heard of/witnessed the violence and went there to collect her brother who she believed was among the melee.
That had to have felt a little too close for comfort. I can see why any candidate, any sane candidate when asked, would not only say "don't do this" but also say essentially "leave me the hell out of it thank you very much; I don't want you."
I think today was his last CA event on his schedule. The violence is sure to occur again though, it's just a question of when, and how badly it goes. Trump will make sure of that.

(1,065 posts)What really irks me is putting labels on people, oh it was a Trump supporter, oh it was a Bernie supporter, oh it was a Hillary supporter. And that is what becomes the focus. Then somehow we get in a fight of who the guy/girl was supporting and looking for facts on that while we're all forgetting there was even violence at all.
All I'm saying is, Focus on stopping the violence, and condemning that rather then other supporters who had nothing to do with it. Which increases negative opinions of all sides involved to each other.

(28,333 posts)People on one side pepper-spraying others, the other side throwing gas canisters, everyone pulling punches, etc., etc., and so on. The goal is intimidation. The only message that gets through in the end seems to be "screw you."
It's very painful. And while I blame the republican party for nurturing the racism, hate and xenophobia that gave us the orange, nose-picking, man-child who has inspired this violence; it's upon all of us to do what we can to make it stop.
