2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumThe same media that lied us into war, is happy to spread lies to support a pro-war candidate.
For those of you who remember the creepy run-up to the War in Iraq, when the media basically became Pravda-like in their advocacy of anyone and anything that was pro-war, and in their condemnation of anyone or anything that opposed the war, you know how absolutist - and yes, totalitarian - the mainstream media can be.
Is the mainstream media not still backed by pro-war corporations? Then wouldn't it make sense for them to do whatever it takes to stop an anti-war candidacy? How can they have their next war, if they don't elect a pro-war candidate???
Things are a little different now with the internet, but the mainstream media still holds sway in popular opinion as the arbiter of what is true or not. Even though there are millions of voices of dissent being heard, many voices challenging the "official" story, most people still rely on the mainstream media outlets to learn "the truth". My advice: think for yourselves. Use your common sense.

(188 posts)The media was just as fooled by LBJ's lies about the Gulf of Tonkin as congress and the rest of us.
Nobody wanted to believe that the President would fool us like that
Oh, he was slick that guy
Hey Hey LBJ
How many kids did you kill today

(55,745 posts)Last year, The Nation magazine wanted to know "Why don't Americans know what really happened in Vietnam?" Interesting read, it brings up how much USA uses the volunteer military and observes the corporate owned news media don't want to bring that up so that people continue to thank the troops for their service without wondering why they're tasked with missions in 133 countries around the world. What the article missed and people need to know:
JFK ordered withdrawal from Vietnam. LBJ reversed it four days after Dallas.
The 1,000 advisors were the beginning. All US military personnel were to be out of the country by the end of 1965, reported James K. Galbraith.
Then in NSAM 273, four days after the assassination in Dallas, LBJ changes the policy to stay and support South Vietnam in its "contest against the externally directed and supported Communist conspiracy."
That important part of the Vietnam story doesn't get repeated anywhere near enough, even on DU. Thanks for remembering, StarTrombone.
