2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumIt was a bold move but will it pay off?
The proclamation by AP was a bold move and I wonder what the true motives are. The timing cannot be overlooked. Just like the timing of Hillary foreign policy speech. So maybe the internal polling didn't show the bump team Hillary was expecting? I've noticed lately there's been a lot of talk about Hillarys internal polling.
This move of announcing that Hillary the nominee could actually have a negative effect on Hillarys turn out so maybe this is some CYA for when Bernie wins California.
You can look at the math anyway you want but until the supers actually vote they are purely polling statistics.
Tomorrow should be interesting.

(13,776 posts)They made the phone calls etc, they added up the numbers, and they wanted to be the first to announce breaking news.
They're calling Hillary the presumptive nominee, not the nominee, so even if delegates change their minds or something else changes between now and the convention, the AP will still have been accurate at the time they made the announcement.
Neither candidate is happy about it so I don't think there's anything nefarious going on. The AP and NBC were just doing what news organizations do.

(7,997 posts)is that every news organization wants to be the first to tell any story. The AP called super delegates to ask who they intended to vote for, and when they got to the magic number they eagerly announced even though everyone had made it clear they preferred to wait until after tomorrow night.

(8,175 posts)or even best it. Hill will win more delegates than bernie in NJ (let's assume she gets 70%), that means he has to win over 467 delegates more than her in cali and the other states to even get close to her.
I seriously doubt this was aimed at helping Bernie. I mean, the media has been predominantly in Hillary camp from day one, so why would they pull this for him? If anything, the "winner" usually hypes people up to stay in the race, while the loser deflates people and discourages their participation, so I think this is aimed at helping Hillary, not Bernie. I think they would have waited till tomorrow night if they had not been intending to "help" someone.
Not surprised at all.
