The Republican Party's Self-Serving Effort to Keep Bernie Sanders' Hope Alive
(snip)
Deep in their hearts, leaders of the Republican Party do not care how the Democrats run their nominating process any more than your brother wants you to get done with your algebra so that you demand a turn with the PlayStation.
And yet! On Monday, as an end to the Democratic contest loomed, the communications team at the Republican National Committee picked up a refrain common to fans of Bernie Sanders: Superdelegates should not be included in calculations of how Sanders is faring against Hillary Clinton. Why not? Because their beloved pals at the Democratic National Committee said not to.

But back to the RNC. The RNC's got a different goal here. It would not mind running against Sanders in the general election a relatively untested candidate with a taste for socialism but it doesn't really care about that. What the RNC really wants to do is to drag out the Democratic process as long as possible. It wants to drive a wedge between Sanders supporters and the Democratic Party, with the goal of getting those voters to either stay home or (dream of dreams) back Trump in November. It wants to keep the contest going, recognizing that Trump's national poll numbers are aided by the split Democratic base.
