2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumI am really going to try and turn a new leaf here. Be a bigger person in the face of Hillary hate.
It's hard, I have to say that. There is still so much I want to say, but realize it won't do anything but make me feel better in that one moment.
I can't promise I won't make a small lapse, cause some stuff is just so over the top... But I will truly try.
I do see many Bernie supporters making an effort, so I will to do my part in helping us to heal and come together.
Best!

(36,221 posts)i'm talking about the plethora of individuals who say they can't stand her and will NEVER vote for her and regurgitate the talking of points of RW who hate her.
Hate is not a word I can use to describe the actions and feeling of the above, even when they essentially spell it out for me?

Sure sounded as though you thought I wanted something from someone. I don't.

(42,862 posts)... will not be found in the methods you choose to pursue them. But, if you feel you must try anyway, then that's your choice. If thread-shitting is your thing, and if imagining ulterior motives when someone makes an effort makes you feel superior (or whatever emotion applies) then, there's nothing I can do to stop you. Make the most of the week that remains... get it out of your system... maybe it will help, maybe not. I cannot predict the future, but I do wish you well regardless.

(45,251 posts)did not make a mistake simply by quoting your own words back to you. Jaysus. You knee jerk every time you are proven wrong is a new attack.
And repeating yourself pointlessly.
Once again, I am not seeking anything, not from you, not from anyone. No clue why you think I am, but I am not.
And anyone who accuses Bernie's DU supporters of hate in the same breath as proclaiming herself to be the bigger person needs a clue.

None of this matters anyway. The primary is over and we have our nominee. What you choose to do, and how you choose to behave for the next eight days is entirely up to you. You'll either join us or you won't.
You'll either make the decision yourself, or the calendar will run out and the decision will be made for you. However it turns out, I wish you well and sincerely hope you'll be joining us in the fight to #DefeatTrump

(25,471 posts)Seriously, many of the worst offenders on DU aren't supporters of either of the candidates. They're trolls.
As for the rest, every candidate in every election has supporters who are jackasses. Ignore the worst of them, or try to just laugh them off. Much of it is just for attention and if they don't get attention, they won't hang around long.

(11,605 posts)Although most of the worst offenders on both sides seem to have enough posts that they are not obvious trolls, unlike in 2008.

(7,299 posts)moment in 2008. The last thing I needed was an Obama supporter sneering and pointing a finger in my face. Some Sanders supporters will continue to vent right up to June 16. I say, let them. You can't argue with a person that doesn't argue back. We, the Hillary supporters, can be more constructive to the cause in the next two weeks with inaction than we can with our actions.

(4,311 posts)Yes, it can be frustrating, but it also helps me feel better about myself as a person. I can honestly say I've gone through this entire primary season without being rude or cruel in any post. Bit of mild snark, sure. But not mean. I CANNOT say that about 2008. I was furious and said many, many stupid things.
I know I feel better about myself in 2016 than I did back then.
And the biggest reason is, it helps Hillary. Let's have her back and get her into the WH!

(18,837 posts)I'm making an effort as well, but I'm probably never going to enthusiastically endorse her.
I understand that a vote for Clinton is a vote against Trump, and we can't afford for him to call 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue his new home.
I've pretty much lost all respect for Bill, so the "2 for 1" deal is not a selling point for me.
I don't post any "fringe" conspiracy theories, I don't post from Fox / Brietbart / Politico / Daily Caller.
I do post from Mother Jones and Huffington Post, and I've heard both called "right wing shills" here when material is posted that presents Clinton in a less-than-flattering result.
I do believe that Sanders going to the convention and walking away with the nomination is the grand mother of all uphill climbs, and while I believe in setting a goal and going after it, I see that as a "grasp versus reach" deal.
I don't believe anything is going to come from the email server imbroglio, and even if it does, I'm pretty well convinced Obama would grant her a pardon on his way out the door.
I just don't like her. It's not hate speech, I don't hate her. I haven't piled on with the superficial attacks about her voice, her yelling, her wardrobe, whatever...I just don't like her, I don't trust her, and that's all I want to say about that. I have my reasons, and listing them here would be counterproductive and an invitation for argument, and I don't want it and I don't need it. What I believe is what I believe, whether I am in agreement with anyone here or not.
So if I'm not a "BernieBro" (I am not) and if I'm not a "BoBer" (I am not) and if I'm not posting conspiracy theories (I am not) and if I am not sexist or a misogynist (I am not) and I say that I see her as the alternative to Trump, and that is the only way I would consider voting for her, am I still "over the top?"
I don't know. Come the 16th, I'll follow the rules of the site. I'm doing my best to follow them now, but I know that the 16th brings us into "Say something nice or say nothing at all," and I've just said the nicest thing I can say. It's Clinton or Trump, and we can't afford to elect Trump.
I also have been avoiding saying anything that will make me feel better in the moment, because there really is nothing that's going to make me feel better about this.

(4,311 posts)You are the absolute best case scenario Hillary (and we, her supporters) can hope for from MANY Bernie supporters, especially in this moment. You're thinking deeply and being honest, not reactionary. I admire that, and you.
Miles Archer
(18,837 posts)I just wanted to be honest, and it looks like that may still be the best policy.
Blanks
(4,835 posts)The entire time that I've been here. So I don't think it's a matter of "Say something nice or nothing at all" it's a matter of supporting your position with argument and not personal attacks.
It's only words after all. None of us are actually, physically in each other's faces. Some people like a good 'discussion' and there are arguments against certain positions that are apparently valid even though (to me) they look a bit too far to the right for a site composed of democrats.
My point is this: Saying negative things about Hillary is not what's gonna get people their walking papers so much as saying rude and obnoxious things to other users rather than defending the position that they've taken. Obviously, you can't promote candidates from other parties, but you aren't doing that.
Thare are civil ways of disagreeing, and that's what (IMHO) has been missing from a lot of the discussions lately.
Miles Archer
(18,837 posts)I don't even want to say negative things because I do feel, at this point, that it's been counterproductive. And some of the attempts to extend an olive branch haven't been all that successful. I had one person dig back into my journal, post something I'd written with a link, and say "How can you say that when you posted this? Spare me your crocodile tears." I felt it was a mix of stalking and personal attack (there was more to it than that) and i just put them on ignore.
Things have been heated. I'm not a hypocrite, I'm not "taking back" anything I've said in the past to appease someone who may want to attack me.
But things have changed, and in order to remain a part of this community, some of us have to change as well. Skinners GE rules that were just posted will go a long way toward getting us there.

(5,306 posts)love of country based in HATRED is no love at all. Being so attached to your "HillaryHate" means you attach hate to those who support her as well.
No happiness in that. Get over your HATE, you just might find love on the other side.

We have work to do! We need to defeat Trump, and we need to focus on making Congress blue again. We have Supreme Court Justices to pick. We don't have time to invest in soothing every hurt feeling.

(1,233 posts)You have to realize that there have been some very ugly things said here about Hillary- HATEFUL things. If you weren't one of the ones saying those things, it isn't about you.
The OP's post is a statement of her intentions moving forward. She should be encouraged rather than criticized.

(35,699 posts)If the OP is a good faith attempt at "healing" then the author should be willing to accept constructive criticism and edit out the offensive words. It is quite easy to do, takes only a couple of seconds.

You aren't really asking for an olive branch, you are looking for a white flag of surrender. That isn't what this is about. Let it go.

(59,503 posts)It is very hard for many who had put that hearts and souls into making Bernie President. It may take a little time, but many will see that on so many issues, a President Trump would destroy everything that Obama accomplished that Bernie agrees with and would make the world less safe.
They need to see where they agree with HRC and disagree with Trump. On domestic issues, I have often posted that there would be little difference in the legislation that HRC or Bernie would get through Congress. (They are BOTH to the left of the right most legislator who votes yes.) As to executive orders and administrative actions (like with the EPA) their values are similar and the experts they would ultimately rely on are similar.
It is true that their foreign policy is different. However, even on this, there is no comparison between Trump and Clinton. I have read or listened (via video on state.gov) to many troubled reporters in foreign countries asking concerned questions about Trump. There is genuine world wide fear of having a loose cannon as President of the United States.
This year, I have thought both Bernie and HRC to be flawed candidates. However, I know that it is rare when you have a candidate you wholeheartedly believe in as a person, a candidate and a statesman. I KNOW, from various posts, that HRC is that person for many people here. I also have experienced a campaign where I was progressively more and more impressed with the integrity, vision, and character of the nominee and was hurt to read and hear many Democrats speak of "holding their noses". It hurt and it made me wonder why many of these people didn't look harder to see things that were good. I will try not to become like that towards HRC.
I also remember a time when that was less common to continue the divisions of the primaries. I remember putting aside many concerns I had about Bill Clinton, especially on the environment, and reading his "Putting people first". It is possible to re-examine the nominee and to concentrate on the good, even while knowing there are big things you disagree on. There are many things in Clinton's past and her positions, that should resonate with people wanting a fairer society, especially for women and children and a better environment. It is those positives that we should concentrate on talking about when we speak to people in the real world ... and for the few months until the election, here.
The fact is there is a stark choice before us: Trump or Clinton. That is an easy choice for me and I think for most Democrats.
