(11,605 posts)In fact, very few do. I think it speaks to his character that he is keeping his commitment to campaign there even though it won't effect the outcome of the primaries and he probably won't even do very well there.

(67,792 posts)I saw a guy who wants to finish his basic business and compete in DC.
I saw a guy who pledged before the nation to work with Clinton to defeat Trump.
I saw a guy who will get respect and - yes - a degree of power at the convention to have serious impact.
I heard a GOOD statement.
Clearly you don't see it that way.

(1,421 posts)Don't really want Hillary Clinton to become the next president. Party unity encompasses a lot. I know Bernie will endorse and work for Clinton after the convention when she will become the official nominee.

(4,805 posts)Men fear thought as they fear nothing else on earth -- more than ruin, more even than death. Thought is subversive and revolutionary, destructive and terrible, thought is merciless to privilege, established institutions, and comfortable habits; thought is anarchic and lawless, indifferent to authority, careless of the well-tried wisdom of the ages. Thought looks into the pit of hell and is not afraid ... Thought is great and swift and free, the light of the world, and the chief glory of man.

(2,193 posts)Not a concession but rather a commitment to fight on for important causes.
Looks forward to a meeting with Clinton to be sure to defeat Trump.
Has a DC rally tonight.
CNN mortified that he did not come out with a concession and promise to back Clinton.
Lord Magus
(1,999 posts)He said he will compete in the DC primary, and then work together with Hillary to beat Trump. He didn't say he plans to drop out after DC, but it's clearly between the lines. I was very encouraged by his statement.
Alex4Martinez
(2,193 posts)As distinguished from fighting on for the nomination.
However, calling for a recount in California could be taken either way and he's not dropping out.
I think the most rational interpretation is that he's there if the party wants him but even if not he intends to push for the most progressive platform possible.
Some candidates just skulk away when the chips are down. Witness the many GOP entrants this year!
Lord Magus
(1,999 posts)He was talking about how there are still ballots left to count. He also didn't suggest that he'd be the winner once the count is complete.

(42,862 posts)You know ... flipped super delegates, uncounted CA ballots, voting irregularities, conspiracy, cheating, indictments, lawsuits, takin' it to Philly, contested convention, no concession speech, no congratulations. How can we be sore winners if there isn't even a loser yet?
Or ...
Don't be so FLICKING hypersensitive and overwrought when someone criticizes a candidate who (by his own account) is still in the contest. His own actions (or lack thereof) make him fair game. Just because he will (obviously) not be the nominee, doesn't mean that every thing he does is now "off-limits" and can be shielded from criticism by crying "sore-winner, sore-winner".

(28,339 posts)YAY! My take from what has been written and said on his statement is he is going to let DC voters have their say, and then concentrate on unity and defeating Trump.

(15,366 posts)correct one. I am more wary, sad to say. I have been "Bernt" since the post-Feb NV caucus events.
Bernie still has not accepted that Clinton is the nominee, IMO.
Sure, let him compete in DC. I have no problem with that. Even after I quit liking him, I believed that he should finish out the primary season - I just wish that he had not continued to bash Hillary while he did that. But now he should quit playing coy with an outcome that anyone who knows DC - and I do - already knows.

(4,119 posts)...actually makes Hillary look stronger. He didn't just hand it over to her when the numbers were severely against him....he made her fight for it.

(36,437 posts)Everything else is window dressing and noise. I agree with his choice to let DC vote on two candidates. Surely, he knows that the shellacking he will take in the District will make California look like a soft caress. His willingness to go through with it is admirable.
geek tragedy
(68,868 posts)Nothing wrong with letting everyone vote.
Sanders knows he's in much better position as a stakeholder in the next administration. If you pitch in now, you get to make demands later.
alcibiades_mystery
(36,437 posts)You win some, you lose some. That's the fundamental rule of democratic citizenry.
Change from the outside sounds nice, but is exceedingly rare. Sanders well knows this: he made that determination 40+ years ago.

(5,942 posts)I believe that Sanders has the right to take it to the convention, and based on his personality, though I wish he'd concede, I've been pretty convinced we'd never see that happen. If you listen to his entire speech, it is all very carefully worded. He never says he will work to get Clinton elected, and I doubt we will ever hear him formally endorse her for president. He will, however, and has pledged to do so, work with her to keep Trump from being elected. He has always been against Trump, but I doubt he will ever be "for" Hillary. I just don't see his ego allowing him to endorse her. I hope I'm wrong about that, but working alongside of someone to reach a common goal as opposed to admitting you lost and she won, are two entirely different things.
Plus, how can he possibly admit to losing now when he's been saying the whole time that the whole process has been rigged from the beginning?

(1,128 posts)That would make everyone involved look bad. I think a concession is likely after DC. As long as he quits attacking the nominee and focuses on the republicans instead.

I thought Hillary's interview with Lester Holt she was very sensitive to Bernie and his campaign.
She needs his voters and she knows this.

(11,605 posts)That way he can keep his promise to campaign for every last vote, give some attention to voters who are usually ignored by national politicians despite being so close, and then end things on his terms.
