2016 Postmortem

It would be worth it just to listen to Republican heads exploding like a fire in a popcorn warehouse.
Michelle Obama: strong, smart as hell, knows exactly where the levers of power connect in DC after eight years as first spouse, has Barack Obama as a literal kitchen cabinet and elegantly attractive as well.
What's not to love?

I'd rather see her put him on the Supreme Court.

(3,473 posts)Amendment XII states:
But no person constitutionally ineligible to the office of President shall be eligible to that of Vice-President of the United States.
Amentdment XXII states:
No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once.
Taken together ... Neither President Obama or President Clinton are eligible to be President after their second term ... which would mean they are not eligible to be Vice-President. Now, you could try to get around it because of the bolded words. If they are VP, they're not actually elected President, which could mean this doesn't apply. That would be a technical reading ... but it would certainly go against the spirit of what those Amendments were trying to accomplish. That also would bring up the question of a former two term President who later becomes Speaker of the House ... would that former President be elevated to President again, if the both the President and VP died at the same time?
At a minimum, it would be held up in court ... and I'm sure the court wouldn't want to get involved in this kind of dispute either, being that they'd want to stay out of Executive Office internal affairs.

(8,760 posts)She knows more about the Presidency than anyone on either side of the aisle who hasn't lived in the White House.
One Black Sheep
(458 posts)that would never work, landslide loss.
Hillary and the Clinton's possibly making a return to the White House already will make many Americans feel uncomfortable at the prospect.
Look at how the Bush family did, that dynasty stuff is going to make people nauseous just thinking about and being reminded of Bush, Jr. as our horrible dynasty president in the recent past.

(458 posts)with this "suggestion", after reading your post #18, you are a sly devil.

(45,851 posts)Do you disagree with casting Michelle as Ripley?
Honestly I think Michelle would tolerate less nonsense than Barack has. My mother was a very strong willed woman with a formidable no-nonsense manner and I guess my love for her made me appreciate strong women, those tend to be my favorite characters..
For instance..

(458 posts)I know you, have read your posts before. You can't fool me, sly one...
Michelle Obama as Ripley, lol. Yea, ok. Nice mental image.
Fumesucker
(45,851 posts)I'm flattered that you think I'm sly and I'll admit to waxing a touch sarcastic, ironic or sardonic at times but given the situation as it exists I believe Michelle Obama could make a credible addition to the Democratic ticket. Maybe not the best possible choice but not an unthinkably bad one either, all this is a matter of perspective and opinion of course.
One Black Sheep
(458 posts)you seem sincere. I guess... Now, a nice clip of Audrey Hepburn getting a haircut...she was way before my time, but I am a big fan!

She was an immense benefit to her husband, I doubt he would have been President without her standing by his side.

Look, it's all about image, you could cast Michelle Obama as Ellen Ripley in an Alien reboot and with a little makeup and CGI she wouldn't be out of place.

wow, nice misogynistic hit there.

(18,402 posts)Michelle Obama is an extremely successful person in her own right: Princeton graduate and Harvard Law graduate, member of a prestigious Chicago law firm (note: it was Michelle who HIRED Obama), then public sector positions as Assistant to the Mayor and Assistant Commissioner of Planning and Development, Executive Director for the Chicago office of Public Allies (a non-profit organization encouraging young people to work on social issues in nonprofit groups and government agencies), Associate Dean of Student Services at the University of Chicago, and finally Vice President for Community and External Affairs at the University of Chicago Hospitals. And then, of course, heading up a number of successful initiatives as First Lady.
One might say that both Hillary Clinton and Michelle Obama MADE their husbands' successes in large part. No coattails for these remarkable women.
I don't think this pick is one that is feasible or probable, but it makes me mad as hell that people on this board who claim to be "progressive" would ever make such a sexist remark.

(53 posts)This is sexist nonsense. While it's true that Michelle Obama doesn't have independent political experience (although she is certainly an intelligent, independently successful person in her own right), Hillary Clinton spent the last 16 years accruing that.
Also, take remedial English classes.
