2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumMemo to my fellow HillBots*
Maybe in the remaining days of this forum we should let be bygones be bygones and refrain from speaking ill of Bernie Sanders. He is in the process of endorsing Hillary Clinton.
*Hillbots, Hillarians, HillShrills; they no longer bother me and they shouldn't bother you. Let us go into the general election with good cheer and hand Donald Trump his incipient fascist ass...
Love always

(13,340 posts)He's not a moron. He knows what's at stake. He will fight for influence, but even Ben Jealous this morning said he expects to Bernie to stand down and endorse Hillary shortly after DC.

Bernie has not conceded, California ballots still being counted, and super delegates need to vote at Philly.

(28,339 posts)How many election cycles you've been through, or if this might be your first.
It's a point of curiosity only.
For transparencies sake; my first vote was for Dukakis. DUKAKIS!
Talk about optimism and idealism crushed? Oh yeah. That was truly punishing.
So anyway, how many primaries and POTUS elections have you voted in? Have you voted in mid-term elections before? Curious to know.

(13,340 posts)My wife was a Bernie supporter. So were a number of my friends. All but one have already gotten behind her in the last week. And that last one admits he will likely support her in the end. Will there be some dead-enders? Sure. But reality is what it is. He lost. We're now down to a binary decision.

(13,340 posts)Now I admit it's based on my relatively small sample of people I know, but it convinces me that nothing LIKE a majority will refuse to support her. Not to mention, EVERY poll on the subject indicates a vast majority of Sanders supporters WILL vote for her.
And I have yet to vote for a candidate I completely agree with. Ever. Life is a series of choices, and right now the choice is between Clinton and Trump.
democrattotheend
(11,605 posts)But it probably won't be a ringing endorsement. I am sure he can find plenty of nice things to say about her, but he will want to stay true to his beliefs. It would be disingenuous for him to hold her up as a great progressive hero when he doesn't see her that way. But he can still encourage his supporters to vote for her because she is a lot better than Trump.
2008 was different because Hillary and Obama were not nearly as far apart ideologically.
MrMickeysMom
(20,453 posts)... It doesn't matter how close Hillary and Barack were in 2008... More Democrats have awakened to the fact that neither one worked towards economic equality and both have served Wall Street very well.
We don't need to level the playing field only for the 1%. We need to level the playing field for every working American. We need to finally step up to the second Bill of Rights so that we catch up to what every other industrialized nation does for its' citizens... not TO its' citizens.
I'm sure we all can find nice things to say about Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. But that is not what the American people and the world need as the point of focus if we give two shits about the future of humanity.
It's that simple, and if you'll hear anything, you'll hear that and little else to confirm that either Clinton or Obama got us there or will take us there.
Maru Kitteh
(28,339 posts)You: He will say nice things about her, but will not hold her up as a progressive hero.
This will be the dog whistle, his blinking in Morse code on a hostage video to "great progressives" that he is trapped behind enemy lines?
Is it possible, that as a career politician of 35+ years, Senator Sanders may have been the perfect person, at the perfect time to pull Hillary back toward her decidedly left, decidedly progressive, frequently demonstrated values and instincts?
Could it be, as those closest to SBS say, that his intention in this run was always to pull the party and it's platform leftward back toward it's best self?
Could it be, that SBS may, with assurances that key pieces of his agenda will live on with HRC, actually find it not just advantageous, but amiable to honor his word and go forward with genuine enthusiasm for this historical candidate?

(18,402 posts)He has only stated (repeatedly) that he will fight against Donald Trump. That's really not good enough. And it's pretty much unprecedented.
But I really don't care at this point. I can see that already, within a week, he has become pretty irrelevant. Most of his supporters are already pivoting. Some never will, but it doesn't really matter.

do you place party over principle? that's the rule book I'm working off of, so Bernie is 'doing the right thing' by standing on principle

(99,710 posts)And I am standing on principle when I saying the honorable thing for him to do is for him to honor his pledge to support the Democratic nominee:

(1,442 posts)'Bernie Sanders Says He Will Certainly Support Hillary Clinton If Shes The Democratic Nominee'
your perspective on the phrase 'certainly support', are you sure it matches up with Bernie's perspective on that phrase? Does it matter to you to make sure you're on the same page with him on that phrase?
You're 'standing' on something, it's just not principle, but perspective...
You're being principled by embracing the perspective right or wrong...
Interesting quote you threw in there in that last bit... Do you consider Bernie to be dishonest?

HumanityExperiment
(1,442 posts)pretty dicey to take a phrase that's subjective and use it as a posting 'mallet' to try to make a point on a forum

How 'hard ball' is politics? Is Bernie throwing too far high and inside causing establishment DEMs to back off the plate? Is convention considered the 9th inning?

(85,986 posts)...then that might make sense.
But Sanders is still poking around looking for an advantage. This isn't tiddlywinks. There are Democratic priorities which require defending against the Sanders campaign assaults on our party, our platform, and our system of elections.
We'd be damned to look the other way and let him have the floor to himself. He'll get as good as he dishes out, and he's still dishing.

(546 posts)would cause the Democratic Party to come down hard on Bernie. He would probably lose ranking member status on the hugely important Budget Committee and possibly Committee Chair if the Dems take the majority. That would cost him dearly in having the power and the influence to implement his primary policy agenda.

I've heard this before. If he goes back on his word that would make him a liar. I don't think he is.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/bernie-sanders-hillary-clinton_us_5706fbbde4b03a9e75d3fd93
Sure I will, he said, when pressed by CBS News Charlie Rose in an interview. Look, as I said a million times, I think the idea of a Donald Trump or a Ted Cruz presidency would be an unmitigated disaster for this country. I will do everything in my power and work as hard as I can to make sure that that does not happen. And if Secretary Clinton is the nominee, I will certainly support her.
It's too bad Bernie does not have the support of some of his people concerning this important matter.
