- Though it looks like the big, established money might win this round, a genuine campaign of the people almost toppled the biggest name in democratic politics from the inside the democratic party.
- Though the democratic party lost this opportunity to go clean and sober, we can hope it caught a glimpse of some of its older ideals, ideals that made it a great party. More than likely though, a part of it will have to calve off and join a more vibrant independent movement.
- Social justice issues are important and we've made significant progress on them during my lifetime. However, economic injustice and the ensuing imbalance of power has gotten much worse during that same time period, and I agree with Senator Sanders that it is our biggest problem.

(46,151 posts)Every presidential season DU has primary wars.
Then when the nominee is chosen, DU goes into election mode, working to elect Dem
Then after the election, the rules switch back. When Clinton is inaugurated you can hold her feet to the fire.
Also you are quite mistaken if you think you will be 'censored' if you talk about economic inequality and the other issues Bernie brought forward.

Bernie still lost.
And incomes, employment, and the number of insured have all risen under our current president, who endorsed Hillary, along with great strides in social justice. So your analysis appears incorrect. The fantasy that Bernie would have accelerated any of these gains didn't move a majority of working class *voters* so no, you aren't the people's choice and no one cheated you out of anything, you just did not make the case.

(34,845 posts)25 years in the Senate and the Sanders 'revolution' has gone nowhere. How much longer do you keep someone on the payroll who keeps saying he'll get the hang of the job any day now?
I'm all in favor of a revolution but Sanders is not the one to lead it. That should have been obvious.

(22,258 posts)..you missed the part about this being a Democrat-centric Website, whose primary purpose for the next 5 months is to see that a Democrat ends up in the White House, rather than the foaming man possum with a bad combover.
Look, I just posted what I consider to be my last word on this in another thread.
Clinton and Sanders met last night for two hours. The end result was not an endorsement from Sanders. The reason for that is that he wants her to "take steps to win his confidence before the Democratic convention," and that...is...not...going...to...happen.
She's not going to be taking any steps, and he's not going to endorse her. Elvis has left the building.
That is my closure.
No matter what I think of Bernie Sanders (and I am a supporter), the "presumptive nominee" is not obligated to "take steps" to appease the person who did not secure the nomination. Life...and politics in particular...just doesn't work that way.
On the other hand, if Sanders gave an endorsement last night, there is no way in hell that 100% of his supporters would have gotten behind that, no freaking way.
So good for Clinton. She's sticking to her agenda. And good for Sanders. He's sticking to his.
That's it, the great "sore winners / sore losers / "Call it, Skinner" debate is over for me.
My first choice was to have Sanders as the nominee. That didn't happen.
My second choice was to have things exactly where they are now.
If anyone else needs "closure," and they're not on board with what I laid out in the first paragraph, this is probably not going to be a particularly welcoming site as of tomorrow. This is not a "free speech zone." It's a private Website owned by individuals who have the right to set the tone of what appears here, and right now that tone is Clinton versus Trump, with all efforts going toward making sure that Trump goes down in defeat.
But cute kitten pictures are still welcome in the Lounge. Just sayin'...

tom-servo
(185 posts)... political discussions of this kind will be a lot less compelling and a lot more predictable. While there was the prospect of nominating someone like Bernie Sanders, I had to participate a little. If it makes you feel better to think that makes me something other than a "Democrat", that's fine.

(55,745 posts)Bernie's movement IS about social justice, equality, and democracy. His candidacy has made clear who really runs Washington: the monied class. They used to own just one political party, now the rich own two. It's up to you, tom-servo, and all who care to restore power to its rightful owners:

(8,322 posts)was establish a new paradigm for funding presidential elections. And I believed he accomplished that mostly as a force of nature. If he hands off my email address (and everybody else's that he has) to Clinton I'll be more than a little disappointed. I'll just have to wait and see what comes to my inbox, I suppose. This account amkes it seem as the two aren't ... well, not quite seeing seeing eye to eye.
The Clinton campaign said that the candidates "discussed a variety of progressive issues where they share common goals like raising wages for working families, eliminating undisclosed money in politics and reducing the cost of college for students and their families."
The Clinton statement said that the two talked about "unifying the party," but the Sanders statement did not, as NBC News noted.
tom-servo
(185 posts)... and it is a significant one, I think. It would be hard for him to fully unify behind Hillary Clinton and maintain his integrity to his supporters. The best he can do is "work with her".
