Related: About this forum44 Percent of DEMOCRATS Want Sanders to Make an Independent Run for the White House
According to a new Reuters/Ipsos poll, 44 percent of Democrats want Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders to make an independent run for the White House.
By Darien Cavanaugh
That bears repeating, thats 44 percent of Democrats, not 44 percent of Sanders supporters.
That number closely corresponds to the 43 percent of voters who have chosen Sanders over rival Hillary Clinton in the Democratic primary to date.
The poll also found that more than three-quarters of Democrats say Sanders should have a major role in shaping the Partys positions and that nearly two thirds say Clinton should choose Sanders as her vice-presidential running mate.
Sanders and his supporters can now rest assured that their voice in deed has been heard throughout much of the Democratic Party and that they are influencing its base, for whatever that might be worth.

(11,605 posts)I guess he has more clout than some people here think. But I take him at his word that he has no plans to run as an independent. I would not support him doing so, as much as I love the guy.

(5,737 posts)A pollster can get almost any answer they want by asking the right question by the wording they use. Democrats? How about likely voting Democrats instead? Sander can run, but he won't have any money to do it. he is also quickly running out of time to get on the ballot in most states. The voices heard have been voices of independents that voted for Sanders. To registered Democrats those voices have been pretty shrill.
Finally, if he does, then it will be clear to most people that he really is trying to help Trump win.

Hill was hoping to repeat nothing burgers like 'we must do better'

This has been the plan all along.
Add Sanders and the game changes.
He runs Indy he will WIN.

(9,527 posts)And if you want to make silly claims about the people's platform why did Sanders get so many fewer delegates and votes? If the people means something it's in who they vote for which has been Clinton. It's obnoxiously disingenuous to claim Sanders somehow represents a majority of people when he trails so badly in the voting.

(47,068 posts)In a sign that Democrats hope their party can unite after a fierce primary season, two-thirds also said that Sanders should endorse Clinton, a former secretary of state and senator who appears bound for a showdown with Republican Donald Trump in November's presidential election.
That article doesn't have a link to the poll questions. Something is strange.
TwilightZone
(25,426 posts)"The poll was conducted from June 7-10 and included 455 respondents. It has a credibility interval, a measure of accuracy, of 5.3 percentage points."
But, there's no link to the actual data or questions. I'm curious how the questions were worded, because they're often more complex than the summary indicates.

(9,313 posts)...how he's such a selfish, bitter, and generally hated man that everyone just wants to "go away" is limited to places like DU.
Out there in the "real world" his persistence in advocating his agenda within the party is viewed favorably. (All the whinging people apparently fail to notice he has ceased campaigning against Hillary.)
He committed to campaign in every state until the last vote was cast. He kept that commitment. Just hours after that last vote was cast he announced that he's doing a live address Thu (i.e., tonight). Why not wait to see what he has to say before throwing tomatoes at him?

(4,407 posts)He's the perfect person for her to be "running against." The stuff he says is so over the top, I just can't believe he's real. As such, he's there to appear as the opposition, when he's nothing of the sort. Hillary is currently running unopposed. There is no actual competition.

(15,512 posts)So it appears. This June 7-10 poll was taken just after the AP report (June 6) and Clinton's decisive win in CA (June 7) so this seems to be Bernie supporters wishful thinking.
In any case, "two-thirds also said that Sanders should endorse Clinton," so reality is setting in.

(13,889 posts)Democrats make up just under 30% of the electorate (http://www.gallup.com/poll/188096/democratic-republican-identification-near-historical-lows.aspx) and I'm far from convinced that Sanders can grow his support far beyond that base. What people say they want and how they actually behave are generally far apart in politics; I don't see so many people opting to follow a candidate with no party (and thus with no party machinery in each state).
But if the left wants to split off from the Democratic party, have at it. Pick a name and set up a competing party and try your luck...though strangely enough, few seem to have the appetite for the volume of work involved, which might be why some on the left keep demanding more power in the Democratic party rather than setting up one of their own.
