2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumI am now asking Bernie Sanders to drop out of the race
I was not one of the people who argued that he should drop out after the New York primary. Even when it became mathematically unlikely and impossible for him to clinch the nomination, I argued that he had the right to stay in. He was a serious candidate, not a single-digit crank candidate, and I appreciate the positive issues that he has brought to this campaign. He inspired many voters and outperformed expectations (even from me). I think he has made Hillary Clinton a better candidate for the Fall.
But Hillary got the most votes, by every metric used. There are some changes to the rules I would like to see in 2020: no superdelegates on the 1st convention ballot, an end to caucuses, and encouraging states to adopt closes primaries. But under the current set of rules, Clinton prevailed and Sanders came in second. The primaries are now over, and it is time for Sanders to bring his campaign to an honorable end.

(13,685 posts)The country needed to be reminded and Bernie has done well at bringing to the people. It is not his ego driving him, it's history and democracy which forces him to continue.

(72,790 posts)Anytime between now and the convention is fine. The day of the convention is fine, since that's when there will be an official nominee. I don't think he's doing any harm by staying in, the GE race doesn't officially begin until after the conventions anyway.
The party will be just fine whether Bernie drops out now, next week or next month. The party will be fine even if Bernie never drops out. Hillary will have enough support to win with or without Bernie.
It's going to come down to whether folks think Hillary is better than Trump, not when the runner-up drops out or not.

(35,619 posts)She wouldn't have to change any positions.
She could just promise to prioritize the issue of public financing of elections, which she's already said she's for.

(44,173 posts)But we already have public financing of (presidential) elections. The spending caps are so low, however, that the candidates don't want to take the money.

(35,619 posts)...public financing system for presidential elections is useless.
She should release a new plan for that and for public funding of Congressional campaigns.

(50,911 posts)the Obama/Warren endorsement day, he would have been part of that, and would have been seen to have a very high profile in the coalition that Hillary is putting together. He would have been seen to be on a par with Obama and Warren in terms of influence on the party agenda going forward. He could have used that to push for his agenda in a much more meaningful way than he has ever done in the past.
He missed his chance. Now it really doesn't matter whether he drops out or not. Or whether he endorses her or not. The rest of the world has moved on, and he becomes more irrelevant every day.
