2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forum16/48 Democratic conventions have been contested. What if Bernie weren't Jewish? Would
he be able to contest the convention without constant accusations of sexism or Trumpism?
http://leavittpartners.com/2016/03/a-history-of-contested-political-conventions/
<edit>
Contested nominating conventions are unusual, but not uncommon for either of the major parties. Since the founding of both political parties (1832 for the Democratic Party, and 1856 for the Republican Party, or GOP) a total of 90 nominating conventions have been held. Of these 90 conventions, 26 or nearly 30% have been contested conventions. The Democrats have had 16 contested conventions out of 48, and the GOP has had 10 out of 42 conventions. They seem rare to us because the last two contested conventions for either party was 1952 for the Democrats, and 1948 for the Republicans. In the modern political era where a large majority of delegates for each party is chosen through primaries and caucuses, a contested convention has not occurred. (In 1976 neither Gerald Ford, the incumbent president nor Ronald Reagan had enough committed delegates to claim a majority heading into the GOP convention; however Ford prevailed prior to the first ballot in securing 52% of the delegate (votes).
When a contested convention does occur, the candidate with the highest number of delegates after the first ballot has only won a minority of times. For the Democrats, the leading candidate after the first ballot secured the nomination 7 out of 16 times. For the Republicans, the leading candidate only secured the nomination 3 out of 10 times.

(58,785 posts)statement long ago now about Bernie does not make a person into a "protected anti-Semite." At least I'm assuming you are referring to the same person as in the other post that just got hidden? Please correct me if I'm mistaken.
As the wife of a Jew, I'm actually rather sensitive about aggressive targeting and hatemongering myself and feel sure I would notice it.

Sarcasm, in case it is not clear to the jury.

That said, there's certainly an anti-Israel contingent here, but I avoid the I/P group religiously. It's part of my atheism.

Yet antisemitism is simply tolerated in this community. It is grotesque.

(10,476 posts)has displayed antisemitic rhetoric against Bernie Sanders. Bernie himself rarely brings up his Jewish roots anyways, so it'd be a rather odd attack tangent for Hillary people to follow.
Please do not insinuate that your fellow DU'ers are antisemitic; it is a serious and heavy criticism to lay on someone...or a general group of someones...so you best e damn sure such an accusation can be backed by proof.

(23,272 posts)It's been across the board from many HRC supporters, calling him comrade Bernie, attacking his time in Israel, spinning his mayoral visit to Burlington's Russian sister city as something sinister, etc.
You're refusal to acknowledge the despicable anti-semitism says a lot.
Tarc
(10,476 posts)in the past that are fair game. His "vast time" spent in Israel was for 6 weeks in a socialist-oriented kibbutz, and he has heaped much praise on Fidel Castro and Daniel Ortega over the years.
There is some, but not in the direction you think. Posts that espouse and promote BDS would be a starter.

(4,558 posts)Personally, even though I'm also totally for Hillary, the ones I've seen, I've joined in with the Sanders peop's. There should be no place for that kind of shit here.
The vast majority of supporters of Hillary are not anti-semites. We should not accept the ones who are just because they support our candidate.
Conversely, I believe the vast majority of supporters of Bernie are not misogynistic. They should not accept the ones who are just because they support their candidate.
I've seen instances of both, and is probably the biggest problem I've had with this primary season.

(25,471 posts)A contested convention is when one candidate doesn't go into the convention with a majority of delegates.
That doesn't apply to 2016. Because, math.

(68,556 posts)I do not believe Skinner tolerates anti-Jewish posters...you Bernie folk are always alerting posts for all sorts of reasons and stacking juries...I have seen one post that you all called antisemitic. but I don't think it was...the poster said Bernie had not reached out to POC. So stop slandering DU...honestly why are you folks even here? You do know that people read DU who are not part of DU right? I was a lurker for quite a while...-most are...some are not friendly to our cause...and what you say is reported back. You really want folks saying we tolerate Anti-Jewish rhetoric here? And let me say again. I don't believe it. This is a great site and I do not believe Skinner would tolerate it...nor the mods.

(12,689 posts)The process was still mostly closed to voters and left up to party insiders. Plus, there were more than two candidates up for the nomination. Right now we have an open process where voters participate and we have only two candidates. For a contested convention you would need more than two candidates for there to even be a second ballot.

(928 posts)of all the ism/ist/ic going on these days antisemitism is the one getting the least amount of attention and backlash.
It's not the outrage of the moment. Just because we're not paying it much attention doesn't mean it's not there.
Take a look at some of the ugliness posted by the RW and Hillary supporters around the internet, insults are slung in his direction for being a Jew. Some very plainly, some not so plain.
